Preface

Most of these records were a gift of the Alumnae Association of the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, received during 1988-1991. Others were given later by Sylvia Barker who was on the Faculty of the School and served as Associate Director of Nursing for many years under Gail Weissman. Some of the files were given to the Archives by other sources, including Mr. William J. Kridel, a Director of the School of Nursing. For related material, see the Nursing Dept. History

The Mount Sinai Hospital Training School for Nurses was opened at The Mount Sinai Hospital in 1881 as a three year diploma school. The length of the program varied a little over time, but remained close to the three year period overall. In 1923 the name was changed to The Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. The School graduated its last class in 1971, bringing the total number of graduates to 4,700. There was a brief merger with the Hunter College School of Nursing and then the Mount Sinai name was removed. The School was female only until its last class in 1971, when one man received a Mount Sinai Nursing diploma. The motto of the School was 'Vota Vita Nostra'.

The records here pertain to both the School of Nursing and the Nursing Service until the closing of the School in 1971. Records dated after 1971 refer to the School only.
