Message From the Director

The Mount Sinai physician-scientist journey is defined by a high-frequency exchange between the laboratory and the bedside. At the Icahn School of Medicine, this path is not a secondary track; it is the core of our institutional mission. Our campus is intentionally designed to collapse the physical and intellectual distance between discovery and care, fostering an environment where a molecular breakthrough in the Hess Center can directly inform a clinical decision in the Guggenheim Pavilion.

This career is a long-term commitment, often spanning a decade or more of intensive training. We recognize that the most significant challenges, the "leaks" in the pipeline, occur during the transitions. Whether it is the "re-entry" challenge of moving from a PhD back to clinical clerkships, the high-stakes balance of a research-integrated residency, or the pivotal shift from a mentored K-award to independent R01 funding, Mount Sinai provides a structured, longitudinal home for those navigating these milestones.

The strength of this ecosystem is rooted in a culture of radical support. We understand that our trainees are building lives while they build their careers. This is an institution where physician-scientists start families and raise children, supported by a community that values personal longevity as much as scientific rigor. Many of us have been trainees in labs, physicians on the wards, and even patients in the health system. This 360-degree perspective informs every resource we provide, from dedicated clinical refreshers for MD-PhDs transitioning from the PhD back to the clinic, to protected research time through R38/StARR funding and PSTP tracks.

The Mount Sinai Academy of Physician-Scientists serves as the connective tissue for this entire community. It exists to demystify the roadmap and centralize the tools necessary for success at every stage. By integrating our world-class research infrastructure with an authentic heart for clinical excellence and individualized advising, we ensure that our physician-scientists are not just participants in the future of medicine—they are the ones defining it.
