Neurosurgery Residency Greatness Program

In the Department of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we're reframing the conversation around resident wellness. We're designing systems to maximize resident education and minimize non-educational work, with the understanding that peak performance in residency requires a dedication to wellness inside and outside the work setting.

To help our neurosurgery residents combat stress and reach their peak surgical, mental, and emotional performances, we are piloting a Neurosurgery Residency Greatness Program, where all neurosurgery residents have the unique opportunity to practice with a highly-specialized Extreme Performance Coach, Daniel Turner, PhD.

Extreme Performance Coaching for Neurosurgery

Performance coaching has been implemented for decades with professional athletes, military personnel, and other influential performers with the primary objective of better preparing the individual or team to perform to the best of their ability. At Mount Sinai, we believe our elite resident physicians, who are the future leaders in the field of neurosurgery, deserve the same treatment.

Dr. Turner takes a deep dive into each individual neurosurgery resident’s skills to highlight their strengths and pinpoint their weakness to strategically guide different aspects of their life, body, and mind so they can maximize their performance.

Highly personalized and evolving every step of the way by the changing needs of the residents and goals of the Neurosurgery Residency Program, the goal of the performance coaching program is to create a culture of greatness—that is, sustainable high performance for every neurosurgery resident.

Program Outcomes

Through team meetings, one-on-one sessions, and in-person shadowing, neurosurgery residents will:

  • Enhance their ability to thrive under adversity
  • Better perform under pressure
  • Prolong endurance
  • Reduce instances of physical and mental injury
  • Prevent underperformance and burnout
  • Develop life skills
  • Accelerate learning
  • Promote healthy recovery
  • Become the best neurosurgeons

The program isn’t strictly limited to improving our neurosurgery residents themselves. Dr. Turner’s observations can lead to improvements in the neurosurgery residency curriculum and even modifications within our Neurosurgery Department’s faculty and staff.

Within the umbrella of the cultural ecosystem, we will help each neurosurgery resident develop their ability to perform at their highest potential individually and as part of a team while developing techniques that strategically improve and protect wellbeing.

Let’s make you be the best you can possibly be.
