Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a premier academic training institution, offering incredible residency and fellowship programs that emphasize in-depth clinical exposure, expansive research, and superb patient care. Established in 1914, we are one of the leading neurosurgery departments in the world—ranked No. 1 for NIH funding in New York, and No. 17 in the United States. As one of the largest subspecialties at Mount Sinai, the Department of Neurosurgery performs more than 3,300 open neurosurgeries, 2,200 endovascular procedures, and 300 stroke thrombectomies a year.

Combining both clinical prowess and robust research, we attract faculty that are not only the top in their field but are globally recognized for their contributions in brain, spine, and central nervous system disorders. We specialize in a variety of neurosurgery subspecialties, including brain tumors, cerebrovascular disorders, neurosurgical oncology, neuromodulation, complex spinal surgery, epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, movement disorders, pediatrics, neurocritical care, and neurotrauma.

The close collaboration between our research and clinical teams ensures that our findings can rapidly translate to new therapies and approaches to patient care. We are committed to fostering an environment of innovation, as evidenced by our Mount Sinai BioDesign center. Through a synergistic partnership between clinicians, technologists, and industry leaders, Mount Sinai BioDesign creates a dynamic ecosystem where novel concepts are transformed into patents, prototypes, and, ultimately, commercially viable products. The success of Mount Sinai BioDesign is evidenced by its robust patent portfolio, multiple funded startups, and ongoing validation studies.

Our Department also uniquely offers an internal, neurosurgical, Academic Research Organization that conducts multicenter clinical trials, manages data-coordinating centers, and operates core labs. Specializing in both endovascular and open neurosurgery, we emphasize trial outcomes and cost-efficient solutions. Extensive data from numerous studies is processed and housed within the Department, providing a valuable resource for residents, fellows, and other trainees.

With longstanding and innovative neurosurgery programs dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, our Department has cultivated a welcoming environment for underrepresented groups in our field. We were the first department nationally to publish a book focused on increasing diversity in neurosurgery. Our Department leads outreach to mentor high school students underrepresented in medicine, invest significantly in visiting electives for those medical students, and once they join our residency program, provide robust mentoring and networking support. We also review and discuss published articles on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics for our current faculty, residents, and staff.
