Message from the Chief Residents
Welcome Class of 2027!
Thank you for your interest in our anesthesiology residency program. At Mount Sinai Morningside (MSM) and Mount Sinai West (MSW) Hospitals, we are a team of enthusiastic and passionate physicians dedicated to becoming excellent anesthesiologists. From your first days as an intern to your last days as a senior resident, our program will provide the opportunities and training necessary to succeed.
The clinical experience you gain in our health system is second to none. Between our two campuses, MSM in the Upper West Side and MSW in Midtown, you will be exposed to an incredible variety of cases that will more than prepare you to practice in any setting. Our residents boast an advanced proficiency in regional anesthesia and continue on to top fellowships in all subspecialties around the country. MSW is a prominent center for neurosurgery and one of the leading sites for complex intracranial surgical interventions in NYC, and a joint replacement center of excellence. We also house a busy high-risk ENT service that allows for a unique difficult airway management experience, and our busy obstetric service enables us to offer the highest neuraxial anesthetic-to-resident ratio in the city.
MSM is a level II trauma center, a neurotrauma center of excellence and is also home to a busy cardiac surgery service where you will become comfortable managing patients with complex cardiac disease. Overall, our two hospitals provide a robust surgical case volume for a consummate anesthesiology residency training experience. In addition, we rotate at several world-renowned institutions on the island of Manhattan, including Mount Sinai Hospital, for heart and liver transplant, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, for thoracic anesthesia, and Children’s Hospital of New York (CHONY) at Columbia University Medical Center, for pediatric anesthesia. The opportunity to learn how anesthesiologists practice at different institutions provides an invaluable experience that truly enables you to become a well-rounded physician.
Outside of the OR, we maintain a strong commitment to academics. MSW houses a state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Medical Simulation, which provides a tremendous simulation experience. With our truly all-encompassing didactic curriculum, residents consistently score well above the national average for the BASIC, ADVANCED, and In-Training Examinations (ITE) every year. The didactic series also includes oral board preparation, and workshops in POCUS and advanced airway management, throughout the year.
The department actively contributes to the pursuit of academic research, as all residents engage in quality improvement projects or research. We have multiple residents selected as Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Resident Scholars. Many have authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and presented original research and medically challenging cases at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology (PGA), and numerous other conferences. Opportunities to become involved are bountiful as residents have been recipients of the Eliasberg Research Scholarship, leaders in health care policy, and are board members of the ASA and New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA). Yearly, residents take part in the Legislative Conferences in both Albany and Washington D.C. where they meet with members of Congress to discuss issues relevant to physician anesthesiologists.
Our residents reap the benefits of a medium-sized training program. Unlike smaller programs that are limited in both case volume and clinician exposure or larger programs that can render you more anonymous than familiar, we are able to get to know our faculty personally. The attendings are firm in their commitment to education and creating a supportive environment, as they understand our strengths and weaknesses, and spend time with us individually to guide our growth as physicians. The warm, family-like environment we are able to maintain within the hospital walls extends beyond our time at work. Our residents spend time cultivating long lasting friendships, and there is no better place to do so than New York City! Our program-provided housing is located directly across the street from MSW (and a jitney ride from MSM), putting residents within walking distance of Central Park, Riverside Park, Lincoln Center, the Theater District, multiple supermarkets and some of the best restaurants and bars.
If you want to live, work, play, and train at one of the best hospitals in one of the most exciting cities in the world with an amazing team, come join us! We can’t wait to meet you.
See you soon,
