From standardized patient examination to navigating publication and leadership development, here are some of the most exciting educational opportunities we offer. Please note that some programs, like our Chief Resident Retreat, are limited to specific training levels.
Standardized Patient Examination and Bioethics Education
Designed for incoming first and second-year residents, these educational activities are offered through The Morchand Center. The Morchand Center uses highly trained professional actors as standardized patients to enhance a trainee’s ability to recognize medical errors. These examinations also increase competency in prescribing responsibly, gathering discharge information, and determining informed consent and advance directives.
Chief Resident Retreat
Each year, the Office of Graduate Medical Education hosts an offsite retreat for rising chief residents to prepare them for additional management responsibilities. This retreat focuses on mastering conflict resolution, leadership development, and learning patient safety and quality improvement skills.
Journal of Scientific Innovation in Medicine
The Journal of Scientific Innovation in Medicine is an open-access, international, peer-reviewed publication focusing on transformative scientific developments in the treatment of human disease. The mission is to advance the understanding of how to apply new technology, scientific discovery, and innovative solutions to expand the frontiers of medicine.
The Editorial Board includes Icahn Mount Sinai residents, fellows, and faculty, and allows participants to develop an understanding of the process of developing scholarly materials. The Journal welcomes manuscripts of original research. Medical student, resident, and fellow papers, as well as accepted conference abstracts, are also accepted.
Leadership Development Program
Our 12-month Leadership Development Program is designed to provide residents and fellows with the skills and tools to work more effectively in a variety of team settings, as well as to increase self-awareness of leadership styles and impact. The Program includes interview and presentation training, as well as discussions with key physician leaders, senior executives of the Mount Sinai Health System, and experts beyond the Health System.
Master’s Degree Tuition Support
Funding support is available through a competitive application process for fellows in Icahn Mount Sinai-sponsored Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship training programs, who also wish to pursue a master’s degree in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Additional support through the Davis Foundation is available for up to two fellows within the underrepresented in medicine community who are training in primary care specialties.
Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society
Residents, fellows, and faculty in Graduate Medical Education (GME)-sponsored training programs may be nominated for induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. To be eligible, residents and fellows must be actively enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship training program and have already completed the PGY-1 year of postgraduate clinical training. Nominees are evaluated based upon demonstrated continued academic and professional achievement, including leadership, professionalism, service, and humanism.
