Preparedness and Acute Intervention for Mass Mental Trauma

RESEARCH

Mass trauma is no longer rare. War, terror, climate disasters, pandemics, and large-scale violence leave deep psychological impacts not only on individuals but entire communities. While physical emergency response systems are often well-developed, mental health response remains fragmented, reactive, and under-resourced.

Preparedness and Acute Intervention for Mass Mental Trauma (PreAct) is a global initiative designed to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from the mental health consequences of mass trauma—with structure, expertise, and compassion. Jointly led by the Mount Sinai Health System in New York and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) in Israel, PreAct brings together world-leading expertise in disaster psychiatry, community engagement, training, and innovation to build a scalable, international framework for mental health preparedness and response.

His work has shaped how communities, health systems, and governments understand and address the psychological impact of mass trauma.

As Chair of the Psychiatric Wing at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov), he plays a central role in shaping clinical practice, research, and innovation within one of Israel’s foremost medical institutions.

Dr. Reuveni integrates evidence-based, trauma-informed psychiatric treatment with a strong understanding of the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms underlying stress and affecting dysregulation.
