Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine a Sinai is a global leader in research, training, and patient care. Ranked continuously in the top 10 for National Institutes of Health funding in psychiatry, in 2023 we received $70 million in active grants. Our research spans the complete spectrum of psychiatric conditions, and we publish, on average, more than 600 papers each year. With almost 400 faculty members,we are also one of the largest departments in the nation. Our dynamic research portfolio, which encompasses more than 60 centers, laboratories, and programs, is growing in depth and translational promise. Together we remain dedicated to advancing life-changing treatments for patients everywhere.

In collaboration across the Mount Sinai Health System, we offer an array of specialized diagnostic and patient care for all psychiatric conditions.  From establishing new models of care to breaking down barriers in treatment access, we are working ensure that our patients are the drivers of everything we do. Across our four Manhattan campuses our faculty treats nearly 200,000 outpatients and 6,000 inpatients annually. The Department also oversees more than 200 inpatient psych beds and an additional 70 beds for the treatment of addiction. 

Our residencies, fellowships, and training opportunities include multiple psychiatry programs at several Mount Sinai Health System hospitals, with each leveraging the strengths of its particular location. Offering a rigorous education in psychiatry, we unite the most advanced technologies and latest research with the very real and imminent needs for psychiatric care, both locally and globally. Our residency program  of the top in the nation, and our National Institute of Mental Health-supported residency & PhD program is the first of its kind nationwide.
