1. Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health

AI Centers and Institutes

The Windreich Department of AI and Human Health is involved with several collaborations, partnerships, and institutions across the Mount Sinai Health System. Alongside our primary partner, the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai, we are committed to advancing health outcomes by working together to provide transformative patient opportunities through the power of artificial intelligence.

The Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence and Human Health

The Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence and Human Health serves as one of the first centers in the United States dedicated to leveraging the untold potential of AI, data science, and imaging to achieve breakthroughs in ophthalmic care.

In this effort, the Department collaborates with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai(NYEE), Mount Sinai/New York Eye and Vision Research Institute, and The Shelley and Steven Einhorn Clinical Research Center at NYEE. The Center will focus on a broad spectrum of research, clinical and diagnostic care, and physician education to help bring AI and its rapidly growing family of technologies and capabilities into the ophthalmic mainstream.

With an emphasis on cutting-edge research, the Center develops population health and value-based vision care models to advance our mission of reducing vision-care service disparities. Equally important is the Center’s role in training the next generation of leaders in eye care and research within the expanding realms of telemedicine, AI-facilitated care, and virtual ophthalmology.

The Mount Sinai Data Warehouse

Another partnership central to the success of the Department is our collaboration with The Mount Sinai Data Warehouse. The Mount Sinai Data Warehouse collects clinical, operational, and financial data for use in clinical and translational research, as well as quality and improvement initiatives. It regularly provides data services that allow access to custom data sets, custom data marts, and de-identified data.

The Warehouse covers a range of electronic medical record and ancillary systems at The Mount Sinai Hospital and is currently expanding to encompass data from Mount Sinai Queens, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, and Mount Sinai Brooklyn.

Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health

The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai (HPI•MS) is a collaboration between the Mount Sinai Health System and the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering in Potsdam, Germany founded in 2019. Our researchers use the tools of data science, biomedical and digital engineering, machine learning and medical expertise to improve outcomes and extend patients’ lives. It is our shared goal to drive innovations that have a positive impact on the lives of patients and the clinicians who work with them, while transforming how people think about their personal health and health systems. The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount is led by Thomas Fuchs, Dr. sc., and includes two key research teams: the Digital Discovery Program and AI Ready Mount Sinai.
