The Division launches its second NIH-funded T32 post-doctoral research training program, Disparities in Aging and Dementia (DiAD). DiAD develops new investigators in the field of aging and dementia, with an emphasis on research involving members of historically marginalized populations.

Icahn Mount Sinai announces a new, combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency program, the first and only medical training program of its kind in New York City, which enrolled its inaugural group of first-year residents in July.

The Division of General Internal Medicine launches an NIH-funded T32 post-doctoral research training program on Cancer Prevention and Control to develop new investigators in the field of cancer prevention and control, with an emphasis on research involving members of historically marginalized populations.

The Division of General Internal Medicine Hepatitis C Clinical & Research Program rebranded as the Respectful & Equitable Access to Comprehensive Healthcare (REACH) Program and broadened the scope of services offered. The REACH Program provides a patient-centered, harm reduction approach to primary care for persons who use alcohol and other drugs, and for individuals living with hepatitis C virus infection.

The Internal Medicine Associates (IMA), a large faculty resident practice, transitioned to a highly organized, team-based, empanelment model which markedly improved resident continuity with patients, provided improved educational oversight and feedback, and resulted in higher resident satisfaction with their ambulatory training.

The Department of Medicine at St. Luke’s Roosevelt creates University Medical Practice Associates (UMPA), a multispecialty group in East Harlem that serves as its outpatient medical practice. It will include more primary care and internal medicine physicians, as well as specialists in cardiology, diabetes management, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonary medicine and women's health.

The Chelsea Village House Call Program, a longstanding home-visit program in lower Manhattan, is now affiliated with The Mount Sinai Department of Medicine. This multidisciplinary program of Chinese- and Spanish-speaking staff serves patients in Manhattan south of 59th Street. Together with the Visiting Doctors Program, Mount Sinai now provides medical care for patients who cannot leave their homes throughout Manhattan.

Preventable Admissions Care Team (PACT) formed by a team of nurses, physicians, and social workers to reduce Medicare re-admissions rates. PACT developed a program of engagement that bridges gaps in care and strengthens hospital-community relationships in a variety of ways, including improved processes for appointments, expanded visiting nurse services, and outpatient programs and support groups. All of these efforts resulted in a 45 percent reduction in re-admissions.

Michael Lesch, MD, became Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Roosevelt and oversaw the training of more than 200 residents and fellows. As a medical student at Johns Hopkins in the 1960s, Dr. Lesch and Dr. William Nyhan identified a rare genetic disorder, characterized by compulsive self-harm, and became known as the Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, which affects the brain and leads to excessive production of uric acid.

Founding of the Visiting Doctors program. It was initially called the Home Visit Initiative of the Dept. of Medicine. An article about it notes: “The team consists of social workers, nurses and physicians, all of whom work to insure continuity of care for homebound patients.

Three internal medicine residents partner with one of the nurses at Internal Medicine Associates (IMA) to start the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program, one of the largest and most recognized home-based primary care programs in the country.

Internal Medical Associates was created out of the General Medical Clinic in 1982.
