1993
The Medical School Advisory Committee unanimously votes to create an independent Academic Department of Emergency Medicine. Sheldon Jacobson, MD is the first Chairman.
1996
The first residents are appointed; the program is three years, PGY 2-4.
1999
First Emergency Medicine class graduates with ceremony held at the Bronx Botanical Garden.
2002
A new ambulance service is created in partnership with Metrocare, with three vehicles.
2003
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship is approved and launches in 2004.
2003
Mount Sinai faculty member receives and NIH R01 grant, the only emergency medicine physician in New York City to get one.
2004
Simulation training is inaugurated.
2004
Mount Sinai’s Emergency Department becomes the first in the Northeast to have a fully electronic patient chart.
2004
The Ultrasound curriculum is established.
2005
Residency is expanded to four years, PGY 1-4.
2005
Mount Sinai becomes a NY State Dept. of Health Designated Stroke Center.
2009
Libertas is funded (and has remained funded ever since).
2012
The Department receives a $12.5 million Innovations Grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for Geriatric Emergency Medicine.
2012
The Geriatric Emergency Department opens, the first in New York City.
2013
Our K12 scholars program expands and includes an intensivist and a pediatrician.
2014
The Sheldon Jacobson Education Center opens.
2014
The Simulation Center opens.
2015
Our T32 grant scores a 12 and becomes the first T32 awarded to Emergency Medicine in the country.

Makini Chisolm-Straker, MD, MPH, (Class of 2013) joins faculty, first Brooklyn-based faculty with NIH support

Brendan G. Carr, MD, MA, MS, recruited and accepts the position of System Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Carr also assumes the position of Chair, Emergency Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital.
2024
Jolion McGreevy, MD, MBE, MPH, appointed as Interim Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine for the Mount Sinai Health System as of January 1, 2024. Dr. McGreevy will replace Brendan G. Carr, MD, MS, MA, who will become Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System.
