The Emergency Medicine Health Care Leadership Fellowship provides in-depth exposure to emergency department leadership and management through didactics, hands-on immersive experiences, national conference attendance, committee membership, quality improvement projects, and practicum work.  

Throughout the one-year program, fellows serve as fully participating members of the Emergency Department management and leadership teams at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West, contributing directly to committees and leading quality and operational projects. They develop proficiency in clinical operations, patient safety, education, information technology, and quality improvement, while being supported through mentorship from the fellowship director and administrative leadership team.

Practicum and Research

At the core of the fellowship, each fellow designs, develops, and implements one major process, quality, or safety project. Under faculty supervision, this project incorporates data collection and analysis with the goal of culminating in a national abstract presentation or peer-reviewed publication. Fellows are also encouraged to participate in established administrative research efforts across the Mount Sinai Health System. A minimum of one scholarly project must be successfully initiated and submitted for presentation during the fellowship year.

Clinical Schedule

As fully credentialed attending physicians, our fellows complete 900 clinical hours over the course of the year, the majority of which are based at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West.

Didactics

Fellows participate in dedicated sessions led by members of Emergency Department leadership, the residency program, nursing, and hospital administration. Sessions occur at regular intervals, with flexibility to accommodate clinical schedules and lecturer availability. Fellows may also access asynchronous content, including recorded sessions from national emergency department meetings.

Fellowship Core Curriculum

The Mount Sinai Health System has several emergency medicine fellowships. To ensure alignment across all programs, our fellows participate in a shared Core Emergency Medicine Fellow Curriculum, where they serve as both learners and educators in collaboration with faculty mentors. Our fellows also take part in the Mount Sinai Health System Emergency Medicine Fellows Research Methodology Lecture Series, which builds knowledge and skills to support scholarly endeavors.

National Conferences and Certifications

The Department of Emergency Medicine funds attendance for fellows to several national conferences. This includes the American College for Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Emergency Department Directors Academy: Leadership Essentials Course, which is held annually in January in San Diego. We also provide funds to attend a one-day course hosted by the New York American College of Emergency Physicians.

Additional conference funding may be available based on the fellow's project focus and interests, including for the ACEP Coding and Reimbursement Webinar. Our fellows also have the opportunity to obtain Lean Green level certification. Participation in departmental events is strongly encouraged.

The Emergency Medicine Health Care Leadership Fellowship accepts one to two fellows per year. This fellowship is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our program runs from July 1 to June 30 on an annual basis. Applicants should be residency trained in Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine and should be at board-certified or board-eligible status.

We typically conduct interviews in mid-October and make offers by the end of October. Due to program requirements, we do not offer visa sponsorship.
