Anesthesiology Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital

  1. Residencies & Fellowship Programs

The Anesthesiology Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital is a four-year program fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our program offers comprehensive training that prepares you to become an outstanding anesthesiologist through exposure to diverse patient populations, advanced technologies, and faculty mentorship. From your first day as an intern through graduation as a CA-3 resident, you will gain progressive independence while developing expertise across all anesthesiology subspecialties. Our curriculum combines an integrated clinical base year with rotations in cardiac, neurologic, pediatric, obstetric, trauma, and transplant anesthesia, alongside robust didactics and simulation-based education.

At The Mount Sinai Hospital, a 1,200-bed academic medical center, we perform more than 65,000 anesthetics annually and manage over 8,000 deliveries, including high-risk obstetric cases. Our patient population includes individuals from New York City's richest and poorest communities, as well as patients from across the tri-state area, nation, and world. This diversity ensures you gain experience managing a wide spectrum of medical complexity and acuity. You will train at multiple sites to maximize your clinical exposure. Most rotations occur at The Mount Sinai Hospital with additional rotations at Elmhurst Hospital Center (a Level I Trauma Center in Queens) and the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx.

Program Highlights

Our program provides access to advanced medical technology, including two-dimensional color flow Doppler, multiplanar transesophageal echocardiography, comprehensive neuraxial and peripheral nerve block techniques, and state-of-the-art ventilation and intubation devices.

Our Human Emulation, Education, and Evaluation Lab for Patient Safety and Professional Study, endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, features high-fidelity mannequin-based patient simulators, virtual reality transesophageal echocardiography, transthoracic echocardiogram, and point-of-care ultrasound simulators, augmented reality anatomy simulators, and innovative cadaver-based educational modules.

We provide strong mentorship and individualized support to help you achieve your goals, whether clinical, academic, research-focused, or otherwise. Through our Eliasberg Scholars program, we offer six academic tracks, each providing dedicated nonclinical time, mentorship, and financial stipends:

Research Scholar Track

For those interested in pursuing a stronger focus on research, you can apply for the Research Scholar Track during your CA-1 year. Residents are paired with faculty mentors and participate in scholarly research projects aimed at advancing the science and clinical practice of anesthesiology practice and education.

Clinical Educator Track

With the simulator lab at its center, the Clinical Educator Track places you in charge of the curriculum and teaching for rotations. You will be involved in the education of medical students and residents from Mount Sinai, as well as students from local schools, as part of our community outreach programs as you master teaching to a variety of audiences using different formats and teaching devices, including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and fully immersive simulation.

Teaching Scholars Track

For residents interested in more formalized education-based initiatives and research, our Teaching Scholars Track focuses on educational development for residents who plan to pursue careers in academic medicine. Residents participate in a scholarly education project along with supplemental educational activities, including journal clubs, institutional conferences, and yearly conferences.

Leadership and Management Track

The Leadership and Management Track facilitates the education and training of highly motivated residents interested in the optimization of patient safety and experience, performance improvement, practice management and revenue cycle, legislative, advocacy,  regulatory affairs, and informatics. Highlights of the program include being part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s Graduate Medical Education Leadership Development Program, attendance with a mentor to conferences, and advocacy activities.

Leadership in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Track

The Leadership in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Track will prepare residents with interest in clinical technology to contribute to the design and development of a novel device within the perioperative setting. This track aims to complement the clinical skill set acquired during residency training to provide resident anesthesiologists with the tools to succeed in the ideation, creation, adoption, and commercialization of novel technologies.

Health Equity, Strategy, and Inclusion Leadership Track

The Health Equity, Strategy, and Inclusion Leadership Track caters to residents interested in becoming change leaders in anesthesiology who will embrace equal opportunities among the clinical workforce, address health care disparities, and optimize equitable health care delivery, patient safety, and experience. It incorporates a dedicated leadership program, organized mentorship from leaders throughout the institution, protected nonclinical time, and financial support.

Resident wellness is a top priority. We adhere to duty hour regulations and create flexibility where it matters most. Everyone is on a first-name basis and our department participates in numerous social events outside of work. A unique aspect of our program is our formal well-being curriculum, featuring dedicated didactic sessions held during protected educational time. These sessions focus on key topics, such as resilience, work-life balance, stress-management strategies, and the promotion of physical, mental, and emotional health.

A cornerstone of this curriculum is the Practice Enhancement, Engagement, Resilience, and Support (PEERS) program. PEERS is a longitudinal, evidence-based program originally designed to help medical trainees process challenges and build adaptive coping strategies. Our residents participate in PEERS sessions quarterly, meeting with their class to reflect on both the challenges and successes of residency. These small-group discussions incorporate principles of mindfulness, positive psychology, and behavioral therapy, providing trainees with practical tools to support personal resilience. In addition, our structured faculty mentorship program and peer buddy system provide guidance at every training stage, from navigating daily residency challenges to planning your career, fellowship applications, and long-term professional goals.

We offer competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, life, and short-term disability insurance at no cost. Additional benefits include vision, long-term disability, and pre-tax deductions to a 403(b)-retirement plan. You can earn supplemental income for extra elective clinical work and receive educational supplements from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Residents scoring above the 75th percentile on the American Board of Anesthesiology In-Training Exam in CA-1 and CA-3 years are eligible for reimbursement for American Board of Anesthesiology certification exams. All residents receive paid access to popular question bank resources and reimbursement for conference presentations and attendance.

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program and utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS) for applications.

Applications are due by October 15. Required application materials include:

  • Complete ERAS application
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation letter
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • United States Medical Licensing Exam results

We have a categorical program and accept 30 residents per year. Selected candidates will be invited to interview with us from late October through early February. You will have the opportunity to speak with faculty, tour the hospital virtually and in person, and meet with current residents.

Our program accepts applicants on the J-1 visa. There is no minimum board score requirement. All applications are reviewed by the resident selection committee independently with a multifactorial process to determine eligibility for interviews.
