Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Department of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers a one-year fellowship accredited by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties in the field of neuro-oncology. Our comprehensive program focuses on training fellows to become neuro-oncology specialists equipped to diagnose and treat conditions related to primary and metastatic brain and spine tumors, central nervous system lymphoma, leptomeningeal disease, and various neurological complications of cancer. During their time within the Department, fellows practice within one of the leading neuro-oncology centers in the United States, where they learn alongside expert neuropathologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists, with the option of renewing for a second year.

Our fellows work directly with clinical attendings to treat a range of neuro-oncology patients. Our fellows also perform evaluations for our clinical trial research program, which encompasses studies designed for adult and pediatric patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors, as well as those with leptomeningeal disease. Fellows additionally have the opportunity to serve as sub-investigators for our ongoing studies. They see patients at The Mount Sinai Hospital, within The Tisch Cancer Institute, and at our outpatient clinics across New York City.

Fellows are expected to stay up-to-date on the latest neuro-oncology literature, take a proactive role in clinical and research activities, help mentor our residents and medical students, and prepare and present the results of their work at national meetings, such as the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting. We also expect them to regularly attend and present at conferences within the Department, including a bi-weekly neuro-oncology tumor board, weekly neurology grand rounds, and monthly journal clubs.

Renewing for a Second Year

We offer an optional second year, during which our fellows develop advanced neuro-oncology knowledge and gain experience in rare neuro-oncologic conditions and complications. They also receive additional faculty mentorship and have increased elective time to pursue their own research and academic interests.

The Department of Neurology selects one promising fellow each year for the Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Applicants should note that this program is accredited by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties rather than the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Our requirements are as follows:

Applicants must have completed a neurology residency and attained qualification to sit for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology examination. They must have completed United States Medical Licensing Examinations I, II, and III.
Fellows must be licensed to practice in New York State before beginning our program.
Foreign medical graduates must have completed the United States Medical Licensing Examinations I, II, and III, a Clinical Skills Assessment exam, and hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certificate.

We will also consider applicants who have completed training in medical oncology or other specialties and who are seeking to complete a one-year program on a case-by-case basis. For this fellowship, we participate in the San Francisco Match. Application registration begins on November 1 and runs through February 29.
