The IBC monitors all activities as required by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules." Additional guidance is provided by Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), which outlines biosafety practice and policy in the United States. The IBC ensures that the research that the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai conducts or sponsors complies with the NIH Guidelines irrespective of the source of funding.
