As part of the broader Mount Sinai Health System, the Dr. Barbara T. Murphy Division of Nephrology provides expert diagnosis and treatment for all forms of kidney disease. Clinical Care Specialties

Often presenting without obvious symptoms in early stages, chronic kidney disease affects 30 million Americans, many of whom are unaware of their condition. Diagnosis involves blood tests measuring creatinine and glomerular filtration rate, along with urine tests and physical examination, with risk factors including advanced age, diabetes, and family history of kidney or heart disease.

Our Chronic Kidney Disease services focus on early detection and treatment to slow disease progression and prevent complications. Management includes medication, blood pressure control, and regular monitoring of kidney function indicators, such as creatinine levels and urinary protein. With early intervention, we can often prevent serious complications and, in some cases, reverse the disease, helping patients maintain their quality of life while avoiding progression to end-stage kidney disease.

Our Critical Care Nephrology service delivers expert management of kidney complications in critically ill patients. We collaborate closely with intensive care teams to manage acute kidney injury, electrolyte disturbances, and complex fluid balance using advanced renal replacement therapies, including continuous renal replacement therapy and hybrid modalities.

Mount Sinai offers comprehensive dialysis services, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, with options for in-center, at-home, and traveling patient care. Hemodialysis typically requires three-to-four hour sessions, three times weekly, while peritoneal dialysis can be performed at home on a flexible schedule. Our services feature the largest peritoneal dialysis program in New York City, state-of-the-art technology, and a dedicated team of nephrologists, nurses, technicians, dietitians, and social workers, all of whom provide compassionate care in comfortable environments designed to maintain our patients’ quality of life.

Our General Nephrology service provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease across all stages—from early chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury to end-stage renal disease. Our specialists focus on early detection, prevention, and evidence-based management to slow disease progression and optimize outcomes. We also provide seamless transitions to dialysis, transplantation, or conservative management as appropriate.

Our Genetic Kidney Disease service expertly delivers evaluation, counseling, and management for patients with hereditary forms of kidney disease. Using state-of-the-art genomic testing and precision medicine approaches, we diagnose rare conditions such as polycystic kidney disease, Alport syndrome, and tubulopathies, and coordinate multidisciplinary care for affected individuals and families.

Our Geriatric and Palliative Care Nephrology service focuses on the unique needs of older adults with kidney disease. We integrate nephrology, geriatrics, and palliative medicine to support individualized treatment goals, symptom management, and shared decision-making—ensuring high-quality, person-centered care for patients across all stages of kidney illness.

The Glomerulonephritis Center at Mount Sinai provides advanced diagnostic and therapeutic expertise for patients with immune-mediated and inflammatory kidney diseases. Our multidisciplinary team works closely with rheumatology and our expert renal pathologists to deliver precision therapies, manage complex cases, and facilitate participation in cutting-edge clinical trials.

Our in-center hemodialysis program delivers comprehensive, high-quality care in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment. Treatments are delivered by experienced nephrologists, dialysis nurses, and patient care technicians using advanced dialysis technology and safety standards.  We emphasize individualized treatment prescriptions, fluid and blood pressure management, and coordination of care across specialties. Many of our general nephrologists provide ongoing care for patients receiving dialysis at affiliated centers throughout New York City, ensuring continuity, accessibility, and personalized attention.  Through continuous monitoring and patient education, we aim to optimize outcomes, enhance quality of life, and support smooth transitions to home dialysis, or transplantation when appropriate.

Our Home Hemodialysis service empowers patients to perform hemodialysis in the comfort of their own homes. Through comprehensive training, technological support, and regular follow-up, we help patients gain greater autonomy, improve treatment satisfaction, and achieve clinical outcomes comparable to or better than in-center dialysis.

Our Hypertension service specializes in the diagnosis and management of secondary and treatment-resistant hypertension, including renovascular and endocrine causes. Our clinicians offer comprehensive evaluation with state-of-the-art monitoring, individualized pharmacologic therapy, and coordination with cardiology and endocrinology to prevent long-term kidney and cardiovascular complications.

Our outpatient Native Kidney Biopsy service provides safe, precise diagnostic evaluation using real-time ultrasound guidance. Performed by experienced nephrologists in a controlled outpatient setting, this procedure allows for accurate tissue sampling with minimal discomfort, rapid recovery, and same-day discharge for most patients. Biopsy specimens are reviewed by expert renal pathologists who collaborate closely with the evaluating nephrologist or care team to establish precise diagnoses and guide individualized treatment plans.

Mount Sinai’s Onco-Nephrology service provides specialized kidney care for patients with cancer or those receiving cancer-related therapies. We manage chemotherapy-related nephrotoxicity, electrolyte disorders, and kidney complications of malignancy, working closely with oncology teams to optimize cancer treatment while preserving renal function.

Our Polycystic Kidney Disease program is a regional leader in the care of patients with autosomal dominant and recessive PKD. We provide comprehensive management including genetic testing, targeted therapies, imaging surveillance, and blood pressure control. Patients also have access to ongoing clinical trials exploring novel disease-modifying treatments.

Mount Sinai’s Peritoneal Dialysis service offers a patient-centered approach to home-based kidney replacement therapy. Our multidisciplinary team provides individualized training, catheter placement coordination, and ongoing support to help patients achieve independence and maintain quality of life through this convenient and flexible dialysis option.

Our Transplant Nephrology service provides expert care to kidney transplant candidates and recipients. Our team partners with Mount Sinai’s renowned Transplant Institute to manage all phases of transplantation—from pre-transplant evaluation and immunologic assessment to long-term post-transplant care, immunosuppression management, and complication prevention.
