Over the last decade, the number of inpatients cared for by nephrologists at the Mount Sinai Health System has increased by more than 50 percent, and the Dr. Barbara T. Murphy Division of Nephrology’s NIH funding has nearly tripled. Our kidney transplant program is one of the largest in the country. Our post-transplant survival rate is among the highest in the nation.

Situated within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Division of Nephrology supports faculty who investigate kidney development, disease, treatment, and prevention, all while training the future leaders in our field. Our current research portfolio includes areas such as kidney precision medicine, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, renal development, polycystic kidney disease, HIV-associated nephropathy, diabetic renal disease, glomerular disease, hypertensive renal disease, genetics and genomics, and transplant immunology.

Our fellowship program continuously draws top trainees from residency programs throughout the country. The caliber of our fellows is evidenced by the fact that our own training program is the first place we look for future faculty. Over the last several years, many of our fellowship graduates have joined our ranks and have successfully secured NIH funding.

With strong community ties to East Harlem, the Division created a program that approaches kidney disease from three perspectives: physician education, patient awareness, diagnosis and intervention. We have also established an ongoing community-based education and screening program.

The National Kidney Foundation reports that an estimated 35.5 million American adults suffer from chronic kidney disease and millions more are at an increased risk of developing it. An estimated 9 in 10 adults with kidney disease do not know they have it.
