The Catherine and Henry J. Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

The Catherine and Henry J. Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine provides state-of-the-art consultation, diagnostic testing, and clinical care to patients with simple and complex respiratory and respiratory-related diseases. Situated within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we embrace our commitment to train the next generation of physician scientists in the field, and engage in research that rapidly advances treatment for our diverse patient population. By leveraging the collective expertise of our faculty, clinicians, researchers, and care teams, we continually build on a legacy of excellence that spans over a century.

At the core of our mission is a dedication to translational research—to ensuring that the latest scientific discoveries are rapidly applied to patient care. Our comprehensive programs, including the Mount Sinai Respiratory Institute, the Center for Sleep Medicine, and our Critical Care Center, offer patients access to cutting-edge treatments and clinical trials. Our pulmonary research efforts encompass both basic and clinical investigations, and are designed to address all forms of lung diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, emphysema, sarcoidosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our investigations within the critical care realm work to optimize patient outcomes, while our sleep medicine studies examine the impacts of sleep disturbances with the goal of developing new therapeutic approaches.

The Division takes pride in nurturing the next generation of specialists through several fellowship programs, each created to provide an experience that balances clinical expertise, research opportunities, and professional development. These fellowship opportunities include the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West, and the Sleep Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Our fellows enjoy the unique advantage of rotating through multiple hospital locations, enhancing their exposure to diverse patient populations. Our collaborative learning environment encourages each fellow to explore their professional interests with the support of our expert faculty mentors, ensuring they exit equipped to excel.
