Message From the Chief

With a distinguished history that spans over a century, the Catherine and Henry J. Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai stands as a pillar of excellence in patient care, research, and education. Today we remain united in our commitment to rapidly enhance patient care through breakthrough translational research, and by training the future leaders in the field.

The Division offers high-value services to all patients, providing several nationally recognized programs for those with complex needs. Our Asthma Center offers personalized treatment plans, while our participation in the nationwide Asthma Clinical Research Center keeps us at the forefront of innovative therapies. The Center for Sleep Medicine further exemplifies our commitment to comprehensive care, and the Division remains focused on expanding access to high quality care to patients both within and beyond New York City.

Our full-spectrum research portfolio powers our ability to deliver that level of care. With a focus on basic sciences, genomics, and AI-driven approaches to improve health outcomes, our current research initiatives address the full range of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine conditions and disease. From exploring the interplay between Alzheimer's and sleep apnea, to investigating lung cancer progression, our research efforts continue to yield significant insights into factors crucial for disease development and treatment response.

At each of our sites, we fully embrace our commitment to train the next generation of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine leaders. By offering unique, individualized training opportunities, we leverage our expert faculty and state-of-the-art resources—like our accredited simulation center—to ensure that tomorrow’s specialists are positioned for success. Indeed the success of our former fellows stands as a testament to the quality of training they received within the Division.

We also recognize that an environment of innovation relies on constant collaboration. Every day, we work to foster a culture that embodies Mount Sinai Health System’s commitment to inclusion and excellence. This collaborative spirit propels our multidisciplinary approach, which in turn further advances patient care. As we look ahead, two areas particularly excite me: the potential of AI to revolutionize treatment, both within our facilities and beyond, and our growing capacity to leverage Mount Sinai's extensive data ecosystem to enable even more informed, real-time clinical decision-making.

The future of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine has never looked brighter. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next, together, in the Catherine and Henry J. Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.
