Graduate Student Awarded Study in Switzerland

PhD candidate, Rose Long, received the Whitaker International Fellowship, which provides young biomedical engineers with an opportunity to study outside the U.S. or Canada, conducting research or interning in the field.

The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program offers health and accident insurance, round-trip airfare, a travel enhancement fund, an enrichment seminar in Europe, and a monthly stipend for living expenses.

As a fellow, Ms. Long will also receive tuition reimbursement up to $10,000. As part of her Whitaker application, she was nominated by a Department Chair, and submitted a letter of support from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) faculty.

Ms. Long is conducting her research in the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory with Dr. James Iatridis. She analyzes data and programs in Python and Matlab; computes results, then synthesizes, presents and discusses them with surgeons and scientists. She designs and makes testing systems, as well as assessing the mechanics of repairs with hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. She has also mentored undergraduate, masters, and medical students and worked as a teaching assistant in Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at ISMMS.

Ms. Long has had a traineeship from the NIGMS-funded Integrated Pharmacological Sciences Training Program T32 GM062754, since 2013. She received a Graduate Student Travel Award from ISMMS in 2014, and more recently, was the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Case Competition at NIH (April, 2015).

Prior to matriculating at ISMMS Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Ms. Long earned her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Vermont at Burlington. Ms. Long’s thesis topic is “Testing and development of an intervertebral disc repair strategy.”
