Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital is a two-year program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The fellowship provides in-depth exposure to the surgical component of oncological care, as well as the opportunity to participate in clinical research. Trainees develop technical and cognitive skills necessary for the multidisciplinary management of patients with cancer. Working in the Division of Surgical Oncology, fellows learn about the treatment of hepatopancreatobiliary, gastroesophageal, peritoneal surface, endocrine malignancies, cutaneous malignancies, soft tissue sarcoma, and the application of regional therapies and robotic-assisted surgery.

Fellows complete clinical rotations at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West, and Mount Sinai Morningside, and graduate with competency in these areas:

  • Evaluation, surgical management, and follow-up of patients with a wide range of malignancies
  • Complex surgical procedures, including minimally-invasive and open
  • Core surgical oncology procedures, such as sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer and melanoma, resection of gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary tumors, including ablation of hepatic tumors, cytoreductive surgery, wide excision of cutaneous malignancy, thyroidectomy, resection of extremity, and retroperitoneal sarcoma
  • Regional therapies, including hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy
  • Clinical research in surgical oncology, with emphasis on understanding study design, methods of data analysis, and presentation of results

Meet the Director

Clinical experience in our program covers the breadth and depth of complex general surgical oncology. Throughout their time in the fellowship, our trainees complete rotations in several service areas, including: breast cancer, general surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, endocrine/head and neck, and elective rotations on orthopedic oncology, thoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, transplant surgery, gynecologic oncology, and palliative care.

Our fellows are vital members of the Mount Sinai Health System. In addition to clinical responsibilities, trainees teach general surgery residents and medical students rotating on the surgical oncology service.

Education occurs at all levels within the Mount Sinai Health System. Our surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, geneticists, and other physicians meet weekly to discuss complex and instructive cases. This collaboration helps us plan well-coordinated, comprehensive patient care.

Fellows participate in weekly Surgical Oncology Didactic Lecture Series, divisional teaching rounds, Department of Surgery Grand Rounds, weekly service discussions and journal clubs, and research conferences. Our fellows also have access to the Surgical Council on Resident Education curriculum and participate in the Society of Surgical Oncology Fellows National Video Conference. Once a year, fellows have an opportunity to perform grand rounds on a topic of their choice and prepare cases for the multidisciplinary tumor boards.

All fellows are expected to participate in research. Fellows devote four months of full-time work to clinical and/or basic science research. We encourage fellows to present their research at national meetings and prepare at least one manuscript for publication.

Eligible candidates are fully trained general surgeons who are expected to or already have graduated from a five-year general surgery residency training program and desire to further their experience and education in complex general surgical oncology. We accept one fellow each year.

All applications will be accepted and reviewed only through the Association of American Medical College's Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants can request a token from the ERAS Fellowships Documents Office and begin working on their application. The deadline to submit the application is in January; however, fellows are encouraged to submit early as interviews are granted on a rolling basis. Selected fellows will have an August 1 start date. We offer a competitive salary starting at $110,565.

Sponsorship of H-1B Visas

On October 20, 2025, United States Citizenship & Immigration Services posted additional guidance to the Presidential Proclamation, Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers, issued on September 19, 2025. Importantly, the guidance specifically provides that the Proclamation does not apply to:

  • Any previously issued or currently valid H-1B visas
  • Any H-1B petition submitted prior to September 21, 2025
  • Any H-1B petition submitted on or after September 21, 2025, that requests an amendment, change of status, or extension of stay for a foreign national inside the U.S.

The update provides that a foreign national beneficiary of such a petition will not be subject to the payment if they then depart the U.S. and apply for an H-1B visa abroad Proclamation. Mount Sinai Health System residency and fellowship training programs will not be able to support H-1B sponsorship for any initial H-1B applications for applicants outside of the United States at this time. Programs will continue to offer H-1B sponsorship for applicants who are currently in the United States seeking to change, extend, or transfer their status.

It is important to note that the Proclamation precludes a change of status to H-1B for any applicants in the United States on visitor visa status based on that approved petition and/or seek reentry to the US on a current H-1B visa. There is no change for clinical J-1 sponsorships as long as both the program and the applicant meet the eligibility criteria.
