Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital
The Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital offers residents, medical students, and pre-clinical students the opportunity to conduct clinical and/or translational research within a premier institution and department. This fellowship, which spans one to two years and begins on July 1, offers the following positions on an annual basis:
- Chief Research Fellow: One position is available each year to resident and post-doc applicants.
- Full-time Research Fellows: Four or five positions are available to medical students taking a research year prior to applying to residency (typically between MS3 and MS4).
- Summer Research Associates: Six to eight positions are available each year and are targeted toward pre-clinical medical students seeking summer learning (June-August).
Position Descriptions
Our division remains committed to producing high-quality studies, and we take pride in our contributions to existing literature and education within the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. At present, we have active projects encompassing nearly every subspecialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery—including breast, hand, microsurgery, aesthetics, craniofacial, and gender-affirming care.
Chief Research Fellow
The Chief Research Fellow assumes a leadership role within the research team and directs ongoing projects, proposals, and facilitates efficient workflow among medical student research fellows, residents, faculty, and research staff within the division. This fellow can be expected to oversee a high volume of projects, and applicants should have prior experience with Institutional Review Board (IRB) drafting and submission, study design, statistics, chart review, database query and management, as well as abstract and manuscript preparation and submission. The Chief Research Fellow can expect 20-30 manuscript and presentation authorships for each year of the one-to-two-year position. This position requires relocation to New York City upon the July 1st start date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Full-time Research Fellow
Full-time Research Fellows help our research team design new studies and complete any outstanding projects. This position provides a structured year for rising MS4 students that prepares them for application to plastic surgery residency programs, and integrates research, clinical exposure, and weekly opportunities for education/didactics. They lead and contribute to multiple studies and are expected to take initiative in completing projects and communicating with appropriate team members to ensure projects move forward in a timely manner. Applicants ideally will have experience with basic statistics, study design, scientific writing, and database management; however, these are not requirements. Students can expect 10-15 clinical manuscripts and conference presentations to culminate from this year-long position. While some aspects of the fellowship can be completed remotely, relocation to New York City is strongly preferred, as we believe that students gain the most in working alongside fellow students, residents, and division faculty. Salary is unfunded.
Summer Research Associate
Summer Research Associates are responsible for creating project proposals, data collection, statistical analysis, and drafting of manuscripts and abstracts. They work as part of the division research team alongside the full-time Research Fellows, the Chief Research Fellow, and other faculty and residents. Summer Research Associates benefit most from joining us in-person, however this is not a requirement and can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. Salary is unfunded.
