Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Vascular Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Vascular Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital is a one-year training program within Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital focused on all aspects of non-coronary vascular diseases. Working in our non-invasive diagnostic laboratory, fellows gain expertise in arterial and venous duplex ultrasonography and physiological testing. They also train in the independent interpretation of computed tomographic, magnetic resonance, and catheter-based angiography. Our fellowship exposes trainees to patients with both common and rare non-coronary vascular diseases. These include:

  • Non-coronary atherosclerosis, including peripheral artery disease, renal artery disease, carotid artery disease, and aortic disease
  • Acute and chronic venous thromboembolic disease
  • Non-atherosclerotic arterial disease, including fibromuscular dysplasia, spontaneous arterial dissection/spontaneous coronary artery dissection, and aneurysms
  • Large vessel vasculitides, such as Takayasu Arteritis, Giant Cell Arteritis, Behcet’s disease, and IgG4-related arterial disease
  • Lymphedema, lipedema, and vascular compression syndromes
  • Genetic and heritable arteriopathies such as Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, vascular Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and other genetic thoracic aortic diseases.

Our fellows are integral members of our team who participate in the complex decision-making processes inherent to patients with vascular disease. They graduate fully prepared for the American Board of Vascular Medicine and the Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation examinations.

Our graduates have gone on to pursue additional fellowships and faculty positions across the country, including:

  • Cardiology Fellow at Mass General Hospital
  • Cardiology Fellow at University of Pennsylvania
  • Cardiology Fellow at Cornell University
  • Non-invasive Cardiology, Morristown New Jersey
  • Vascular Medicine Staff Physician, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus
  • Non-invasive Cardiology, Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital
  • Non-invasive Cardiology, Baptist Health Heart and Vascular Care, Miami

The Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Vascular Medicine Fellowship trains with the understanding that excellent vascular care is multidisciplinary. We have strong relationships with our colleagues in interventional cardiology and radiology, vascular surgery, neurovascular surgery, cardiovascular genetics, rheumatology, and hematology. Our fellowship trainees and faculty are also active contributors to the multidisciplinary pulmonary embolism response team for the Mount Sinai Health System.

Fellows spend at least two weeks with vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, and interventional radiology. They can also pursue electives tailored to their interests in areas such as endovenous ablations, cardiovascular genetics, and rheumatology. In addition to this rich clinical experience, the fellowship maintains a rigorous academic curriculum through journal clubs, didactics, research opportunities, and presentations at local and national meetings.

Through our work with the Society for Vascular Medicine’s Michael R. Jaff, DO, MSVM, Fellows Leadership Institute, our fellows can connect with mentors and collaborative opportunities with other vascular medicine trainees across the country.

The Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Vascular Medicine Fellowship is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
