Vascular Neurology Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Health System

Our program is a one-year ACGME-approved fellowship in vascular neurology and offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the management of cerebrovascular disease in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. There are four fellows each year. The Mount Sinai Health System is one of the nation’s largest and busiest hospital networks, and our fellows assist in directing the care of a uniquely diverse patient population across several Mount Sinai sites. Most of the fellows’ time is spent at The Mount Sinai Hospital located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with additional rotations at the Mount Sinai West campus as well as Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. At all these sites, fellows work closely with our interventional neuroradiology (IR) team – the largest and most active in New York City - as well as with our well-recognized neuroradiology and neurocritical care teams. Our fellows provide leadership to the entire vascular neurology team, consisting of neurology residents, PAs, and ARNPs.

The stroke faculty across the hospitals of the Mount Sinai Health System are committed to providing our fellows with the most up-to-date and comprehensive vascular neurology training.

Didactics
In addition to their clinical rotations, fellows participate in multiple conferences designed to enhance their skills in teaching, critical analysis of literature, complex neurovascular cases, and neuroradiology. They lead weekly multidisciplinary conferences attended by stroke, IR and neuroradiology faculty; they present at monthly journal clubs and clinical case conferences; and they participate in weekly stroke conferences led by both Mount Sinai faculty and experts from around the country on current topics in vascular neurology.

Fellows follow their own patients in their outpatient stroke fellows’ clinic, which is held weekly at the Mount Sinai Hospital and staffed by multiple stroke faculty. Each week, one of the staffing attendings gives a brief didactic focused on high-yeild outpatient neurovascular topics.

Fellows have 3 months of dedicated elective time, providing them the opportunity to customize their educational experience and pursue topics of personal and professional interest. Elective options include participating in ongoing federally funded neuroepidemiologic and clinical research projects, quality improvement and medical education projects, transcranial and carotid doppler training, neuroradiology, interventional neuroradiology, neurorehabilitation, neuro-otology, neuropathology, and neurocritical care. The program provides flexibility and opportunity to expand beyond these disciplines per the fellows wishes.

Our program provides financial support and schedule flexibility to allow our fellows to attend external conferences each year (the International Stroke conference, the American Academy of Neurology conference), as well as the transcranial doppler course that is offered at Wake Forest, as per fellow interest.

8 to 9 months of inpatient service (The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West, Elmhurst Hospital)
