Podiatry Residency at Mount Sinai South Nassau

The Podiatry Residency at Mount Sinai Nassau is dedicated to training the next generation of compassionate, highly skilled, and academically grounded foot and ankle surgeons. Affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, our three-year program combines rigorous surgical education with broad clinical exposure, preparing residents for independent practice, fellowship training, and leadership roles in both academic and community settings.

Our residents train alongside faculty experts in an environment that emphasizes growth at every stage. From developing foundational skills to advanced surgical autonomy, our commitment to evidence-based care equips our residents for professional excellence.

Meet the Fellowship Director

Based at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, New York, our curriculum follows a three-year arc that builds core clinical competencies early on and expands surgical responsibility and independence as residents earn skill and confidence. This training includes in-patient care, out-patient clinics, emergency consultations, and ample operating room exposure for every resident.

Surgical Experience

Our residents gain hands-on experience across a wide spectrum of podiatric surgical pathology. These experiences include forefoot procedures, such as hallux valgus and hallux rigidus correction, lesser toe deformities, and minimally invasive techniques, as well as complex rearfoot and ankle reconstruction, such as flatfoot and cavus deformity correction, ankle instability repair, and tendon pathology. Residents additionally develop proficiency in acute trauma management, diabetic limb salvage, Charcot neuroarthropathy, advanced wound care and soft tissue reconstruction, and sports medicine.

Rotations

To ensure a well-rounded podiatric education, residents rotate through several core medical and surgical specialties. These interdisciplinary experiences strengthen residents’ medical judgment, perioperative competence, and ability to collaborate across care teams.

Specialty rotations include:

  • Orthopedic Surgery (trauma, sports medicine, fracture management)
  • Vascular Surgery (peripheral arterial disease, limb salvage, revascularization)
  • Plastic Surgery (soft tissue reconstruction, wound coverage, grafts, and flaps)
  • Infectious Disease (diabetic foot infections, osteomyelitis, antibiotic stewardship)
  • Internal Medicine (medical optimization, in-patient management, complex comorbidities)
  • General Surgery (surgical principles, perioperative care, and acute management)
  • Emergency Medicine (acute foot and ankle pathology, trauma evaluation)

Conferences and Didactics

Our weekly didactics are based on competencies established by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. These include case-based learning, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and board-oriented lectures. Board preparation is integrated throughout all three training years, and residents graduate with robust surgical logs and readiness for board qualification.

We participate in the Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies and the Centralized Residency Interview Program. . More information on the application process can be accessed through the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine.
