Emergency Medicine Health Care Leadership (Administration) Fellowship

The Mount Sinai Health System Emergency Medicine Health Care Leadership (HCL) fellowship is a unique one-year fellowship designed to provide advanced training in all aspects of ED leadership, quality, operations and management. The goal is to provide the fellow with the tools necessary to take a junior level ED administrative position on graduation and effectively improve the clinical operations of their chosen institution.

Program Overview

The fellow becomes a full participating member of the ED management and leadership team. They are given a variety of committee assignments and projects, including those where they are tasked to lead meaningful change in the department. As a member of the ED management team, the physician will become proficient in issues related to medical quality, patient safety, education, and quality improvement. Upon graduating, the fellow will be capable of working effectively with other departments to enhance patient safety, navigate the patient experience, develop strategic thinking and solve operational issues in the department typically managed by a medical director.

Fellows are considered half-time attending faculty and are expected to work an average of 20 clinical hours per week in the ED divided between both sites. Compensation for the HCL  Fellow includes a competitive salary based on half-time attending status. In addition to fellowship-related activities, the clinical duties allow for enhancement of professional skills as an academic attending physician.

The HCL fellowship is not an ACGME accredited fellowship as there are no ACGME accredited fellowships in administration. The program is limited to a max of two fellows per year, one fellow at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West and the other fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital. Standard length of fellowship is 1 year with the potential for a two-year fellowship if an advanced degree, the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program, at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai,

Research

Administrative fellows will generate an independent project under the guidance of faculty mentors. If interested, they can also participate in any one of a number of established administrative-based research efforts across the Mount Sinai Health System. A minimum of one scholarly project is to be successfully initiated during the 1-year fellowship. Work generated during the duration of the fellowship is expected to be presented or submitted for publication.
