Message From the Director

  1. Office for Physician-Scientist Research Training

For decades, the number of physician-scientists has steadily declined, creating a critical gap in our ability to translate discoveries from bench to bedside. There is an urgent need for clinicians who are equally fluent in scientific inquiry and patient care—individuals who can bridge disciplines and accelerate innovation in medicine.

At Mount Sinai, the Office for Physician-Scientist Research Training is committed to reversing this trend. We established it to oversee development of activities and initiatives that support resident and clinical fellow physician-scientists, and to foster the physician-scientist community at Mount Sinai. Another goal of ours is to expand both the number and the rigor of research residencies, as well as dedicated research tracks within Mount Sinai’s existing residency programs. By strengthening and growing these programs within our institution, we aim to provide structured, high-quality training environments that support the development of future physician-scientists.

In parallel, we are investing in career development initiatives and programming that support residents and fellows who seek to integrate research into their clinical training. These efforts include mentorship, protected research time, and targeted educational opportunities designed to foster both skill development and long-term engagement in research.

Ultimately, our mission is not only to train physician-scientists, but to ensure that they remain committed to research throughout their careers—advancing discovery, improving patient outcomes, and shaping the future of medicine.
