Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency – Mount Sinai West

Welcome to the Residency Program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai West.

We are a four-year, fully accredited program that balances academic and clinical experience. Upon graduation, you will be prepared to enter any subspecialty fellowship program within obstetrics and gynecology, or to begin practicing as a general obstetrician and gynecologist. Located on New York City’s Upper West Side, Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West are members of the Mount Sinai Health System and academic affiliates of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Our location within a thriving, diverse New York City neighborhood offers an invaluable breadth of learning experiences.

Our residency program’s mission is to train the next generation of physicians to thrive in their careers as clinicians, educators, researchers, and leaders in obstetrics and gynecology. We ensure a rigorous yet supportive educational environment by providing expertise, resources, and broad clinical experience while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to the finest and most comprehensive women’s health care, the teaching and training of fully qualified obstetrician/gynecologists, and to continued research into new therapies in the field. The department has over 80 attending physicians in all major divisions, covering the depth and breadth of the specialty. Annually, we perform about 6,000 deliveries, 2,800 gynecologic surgeries, and over 20,000 fetal evaluation procedures. In addition, we provide outpatient services in general obstetrics, general gynecology, and all subspecialties; these total over 20,000 visits annually.

The aims of our residency program are:

  • Recruit top candidates who are compassionate, engaged, diverse, and dedicated to advocating for patients
  • Ensure that residents develop high-level clinical skills and judgment in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Inspire residents to develop passion and expertise within general obstetrics and gynecology and prepare them to enter fellowship in any of the subspecialties, if desired
  • Provide the opportunity to perform and participate in clinical research, quality improvement, and critical analysis of medical literature
  • Create an environment that promotes a focus on wellness and resiliency
  • Develop critical skills and a commitment to life-long learning

Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity

Our program, with the support of our medical school, hospital system and department, strives to create an inclusive setting for our learners, employees and patients.  In order to excel in education and healthcare delivery, we are committed to innovation and leadership in advocacy, diversity, equity and inclusion. We recognize the need to ensure that our faculty, staff, residents and students represent the diverse community that we serve and we strive to recruit from a broad range of backgrounds. We are supported in this mission by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Our department has continued to strengthen its commitment to diversity, inclusion and health equity by establishing a Health Equity Taskforce. The Health Equity Taskforce investigates how health inequities are affecting the communities that we serve and how our department can work to improve these inequities. Our residents are active members of this task force. We have a dedicated health equity curriculum that is incorporated into our resident didactic time. When workplace diversity and awareness of health inequities increases, health and well-being of our learners, employees, and patients also increases. Our department is committed to integrity and accountability, and we strive as a department and as individuals to recognize, cultivate, and promote all forms of diversity and to fully understand the needs of our communities.
