Special Faculty Appointments

The following special academic appointments will also be available to faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine and its affiliated institutions.

Qualifications: Appointment to this title may be extended to individuals who are being recommended for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor, Professor, Associate Clinical Professor or Clinical Professor level.

Appointment: Appointment to this position will be at the discretion of the Department Chair. This appointment is a transitional designation of no more than one year in duration, although under exceptional circumstances the Dean may approve an extension.

If a permanent title is granted, the Senior Faculty title will be superseded by the permanent faculty title retroactive to the date of hire. If a permanent title is not granted, then the Senior Faculty appointment will terminate automatically upon final action on the application. There is no notice of non-reappointment requirement for this title.

If the institutional Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure does not receive complete and appropriate appointment documents within one year of an individual's date of hire and the Dean has not approved an extension of the Senior Faculty title beyond one year, the individual will be appointed to the assistant professor rank retroactive to the hire date.

Qualifications: Appointment with this title may be extended to individuals with doctoral degrees who hold a permanent position at another institution, but serve full-time on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine for a specified limited term.

Appointment: Appointment to this position is at the discretion of the Department Chair. The academic rank granted visiting faculty will be equivalent to the rank held at the institution of permanent appointment.

Qualifications: These titles will usually be awarded to individuals with doctoral degrees who hold primary, permanent appointments at other institutions and by invitation participate in the functions of a department of the Icahn School of Medicine on a limited basis.

Appointment and Term: Appointment to these positions is at the discretion of the Department Chair.22 Appointment to these positions will be for a term that does not exceed one year. Reappointment may be made without limitation on the number of reappointments permitted. The rank of Professorial Lecturer will be granted to those who hold the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the institution of primary, permanent appointment; the rank of Lecturer will be granted to those who hold the rank of Assistant Professor or lower rank at the institution of primary, permanent appointment.

Qualifications: Appointment to this title may be extended to individuals with doctoral degrees21 who hold primary, permanent appointments at other institutions and by invitation participate in the functions of a department of the Icahn School of Medicine on a limited basis without financial remuneration.

Appointment and Term: Appointment to this position is at the discretion of the Department Chair.22 At intervals no greater than three years, the Chair can determine whether a continued appointment is warranted based on an individual’s activities at Mount Sinai. The academic rank granted Adjunct faculty will be no higher than the rank held at the institution of primary, permanent appointment.

Qualifications: Appointment to this title may be extended to individuals at ranks less than Professor who are retiring after many years of service to the School of Medicine. Such individuals must indicate their willingness to accept special teaching assignments at the request of the Dean or Department Chairperson.

Appointment and Term: Appointment to this position is at the discretion of the Department Chairperson and the approval of the Dean. Appointment to this position will be without term and without minimal service requirements.

Qualifications: Full-time and voluntary faculty holding the rank of Professor may be granted the title of Emeritus upon retirement.

Appointment and Term: Appointment to the Emeritus status is at the discretion of the Department Chair and the approval of the Dean. Appointment to this position will be without term and without minimal service requirements. Individuals who are granted emeritus status are not eligible to receive compensation from Mount Sinai, and Mount Sinai does not have any obligation to provide office space or other resources.

21Doctoral degrees include Doctor of Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatric Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Osteopathy, Jurisprudence, Public Health, Science, Social Work, and Philosophy (PhD). Under exceptional circumstances, the Department Chair may recommend individuals for appointment who lack doctoral degrees but otherwise fulfill the qualifications for appointments. Any recommendation by a Department Chair of an individual without a doctoral degree for appointment to the position of Instructor or higher ranks will be subject to the approval of the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

22All appointments and promotions made at the discretion of the Chair will require verification and written documentation of credentials by the Chair.
