Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship

The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a one-year program that teaches psychiatrists how to assess and treat substance use and co-occurring disorders in specialized inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows train at Mount Sinai West, the Mount Sinai-Behavioral Health Center (MSBHC), and the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, developing expertise in pharmacological treatment options such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, and more. Accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the fellowship also educates trainees in various psychotherapies for addictive disorders, including group therapy, motivational interviewing, and other therapeutic approaches.

Fellows have the opportunity to focus on a specific area aligned with their professional interests. Our teaching faculty are solely dedicated to addiction care, and include board-certified addiction psychiatrists, addiction medicine attending physicians, and psychologists. During your fellowship, you will teach and supervise residents and medical students, as well as assume leadership roles among multidisciplinary teams.

Curriculum and Research

The fellowship curriculum incorporates didactic education covering the biological, psychological, and social theories of addiction. It also includes academic activities such as grand rounds, journal clubs, and research projects. Trainees can opt for a second year of the fellowship, which offers extensive involvement in addiction psychiatry research activities and the chance to collaborate with internationally renowned scientists and researchers who specialize in addictions. A wide range of research opportunities are available, spanning basic science, neuroimaging, human laboratory studies, and treatment outcomes.

Fellows can select up to two of the following electives: Ketamine, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), jail, residential treatment facility, supervised injection site, pain management, and OBGYN/addiction clinic. There is also protected time on Wednesday afternoons for fellows to attend didactics. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded clinical and research training experience.

How to Apply

Eligible applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency, possess a valid New York State medical license, and hold an individual Drug Enforcement Agency number. We participate in the National Resident Matching Program and accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS). The fellowship program sponsors visas and encourages international applicants who completed an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency.

We accept up to four fellows per year for the one-year fellowship. There is an optional second year dedicated to research.

Our program spans three clinical sites, offering fellows the opportunity to work in a range of treatment settings and patient populations. All fellows rotate for four months at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and eight months at either Mount Sinai West or the Mount Sinai-Behavioral Health Center.
