Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital is a two-year program designed to train the next generation of surgeons in women's health care. The fellowship provides extensive hands-on experience from day one, with fellows immediately participating in complex surgical cases while teaching residents and learning advanced techniques. We offer an exceptional diversity of procedures, including traditional laparoscopy, robotic surgery, open procedures, and complex hysteroscopy, both in office and operating room settings. Fellows benefit from nearly a century of combined surgical expertise among our faculty, who specialize in endometriosis, fibroids, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and reproductive issues.

The fellowship combines rigorous clinical training with robust research opportunities, allowing fellows to work collaboratively with faculty across the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science and the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. A unique feature of our fellowship is the fellow-run pelvic pain clinic, which focuses specifically on chronic pelvic pain management through both surgical and non-surgical approaches—an opportunity rarely available during residency or other fellowship programs. Fellows receive personalized mentorship from attendings representing diverse career paths, from private practice models to purely academic and research-focused positions.

The fellowship follows the nationally validated American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) curriculum, ensuring comprehensive and standardized training in complex benign gynecology. The didactic program includes regular journal club sessions, case conferences, and grand rounds presentations. Fellows are expected to attend and prepare lectures covering basic and advanced laparoscopy, robotics, and hysteroscopy techniques.

Hands-on training is emphasized through participation in laboratory exercises using state-of-the-art simulators for cystoscopy, laparoscopy, and hysteroscopy. The curriculum is designed to develop proficiency in treating conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy, while mastering procedures, including all varieties of laparoscopic hysterectomy, diagnostic, and operative hysteroscopy, and complex endoscopic suturing techniques.

Fellows rotate between two clinical sites. At The Mount Sinai Hospital, fellows gain experience in surgery for reproductive surgical outcomes, advanced hysteroscopy, robotic surgery training, endometriosis, and focused specialty care for fibroid surgery and heavy menstrual bleeding. Fellows also participate in a dedicated pelvic pain rotation, providing specialized care for patients with chronic pelvic pain through both surgical and non-surgical approaches.

At White Plains Hospital, fellows are exposed to minimally invasive surgical techniques for precancerous and cancerous pathology, including extensive experience with laparoscopic and high-volume robotic surgery.

Research is a fundamental component of the fellowship program. Fellows are required to complete and publish at least one research paper on a topic relevant to gynecologic endoscopy prior to graduation. The program provides robust research infrastructure and mentorship opportunities to support fellows throughout their research endeavors. Fellows also have access to quality improvement activities and can participate in innovative research pathways.

A unique aspect of the research program is participation in surgical innovation pathways through Mount Sinai Innovation Partners. These initiatives focus on developing cutting-edge solutions for patient care, including the development of non-invasive diagnostic tools such as blood tests for endometriosis, artificial intelligence applications for imaging interpretation, and other innovative approaches that can fast-track improvements in patient care for traditionally difficult-to-diagnose conditions.

The Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the AAGL. The program accepts one fellow per year.

Applicants must have completed their residency in obstetrics and gynecology and demonstrate a strong interest in becoming proficient in gynecologic endoscopy and robotic surgery. The program is designed for physicians seeking to become expert clinicians and teachers of gynecologic endoscopy in academic settings. For specific application requirements and deadlines, candidates should refer to the AAGL guidelines and NRMP timeline for fellowship applications.
