MSH Diagnostic Radiology Residency | Icahn School of Medicine

Our four-year residency training program provides outstanding experience in all of the radiologic subspecialties. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to educating our trainees in both the ambulatory and inpatient hospital settings. Residents benefit from clinical training at The Mount Sinai Hospital, which serves a diverse community and functions as a tertiary referral center for complex diseases. We maintain state-of-the-art equipment in The Mount Sinai Hospital complex and in the Hess Center for Science and Medicine.

The classroom component of the curriculum includes twice-daily educational conferences and a monthly journal club. You will attend the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology during your third year of training.

Our faculty encourages you to participate in research throughout training. You will work with a faculty mentor when you enter our program, to ensure that you remain aware of the many research opportunities available here. We also have ample financial support to allow you to attend national meetings for accepted presentations and abstracts.

We accept eight residents each year.

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital includes a number of benefits related to housing, health insurance, meals, vacation time, and more.

Housing

Mount Sinai owns numerous apartment buildings in the vicinity, which are used for resident housing. All incoming residents are guaranteed housing. Accommodation includes studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments. Household size is a factor in determining housing assignments. All Upper East Side housing is within walking distance to Mount Sinai. Additional Mount Sinai housing is available in the Upper West Side and Midtown. On-site hospital parking is offered to residents at a reduced monthly rate. Pre-tax dollars can be used toward commuting expenses.

Health Insurance

Mount Sinai provides health coverage for residents. Additional benefits include:

Prescription drug plan, dental coverage, a vision coverage at no cost to the resident and his/her family.
Life insurance, short-and long-term disability insurance, and malpractice insurance at no cost to the resident.
Available dependent and child life insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
Available flexible spending accounts for health care and dependent care.

Conference Stipend

The radiology department reimburses travel expenses up to $2,500 to attend clinical and research meetings for the presentation of papers, abstracts, and scientific exhibits. This stipend covers meeting registration fees, transportation expenses including domestic coach air travel, lodging, and per diem expenses such as meals. An additional $500 travel support fund is available from GME. Furthermore, the department provides a stipend to attend the ACE Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) course during the third year of radiology residency training. The department also pays for residents to attend the NYRS Core Exam Review Course (CERC) in preparation for board review.

Meal Stipend

GME provides an annual $1,350 meal stipend to all residents. The radiology department provides an additional annual $1,200. These funds can be used at all food service stations at Mount Sinai including the cafeteria and on-site Starbucks.

Education Stipends

The radiology department supports resident expenditures related to educational enhancement. Digital education resources such as StatDx, RadPrimer, and MRI Online are provided at no cost to the resident. The department pays for New York Roentgen Society (NYRS) membership dues. The department will also reimburse BLS and ACLS certification and renewal courses, as well as ABR exam fees. GME provides an annual $700 educational stipend to all residents. The department provides an additional annual $650 educational stipend.

Vacation

Residents receive four weeks of vacation that may be used as single week blocks or combined into multi-week blocks. Residents typically receive the vacation blocks they request, although scheduling must consider the clinical needs of the department. Residents accrue one personal day per quarter and have unlimited sick days.

Resident wellbeing is strongly emphasized within the Department of Radiology. We strive to make sure that residents are provided with robust training that is safe, balanced, and enjoyable. Additionally, we offer a variety of resources to ensure that our residents continue to feel fulfilled and joyful during their training. Some of our policies and programs include:

Wellness curriculum: As a commitment to maintaining and achieving optimal physical health and mental wellbeing, we incorporated a monthly wellness curriculum into our noon conference schedule. This includes activities such as guided meditation sessions. Sinai therapy dog visits, and catered snack and lunch breaks. Additionally, our department participates in the PEERS program (Practice Enhancement, Engagement, Resilience, & Support), a trainee-led, structured, longitudinal program aimed at cultivating well-being, resilience, and community amongst medical trainees.
Resident wellness champion: A designated faculty representative will strive to voice residents’ concerns and act as a liaison with the Office of Wellbeing and Resilience.
Resident health needs: Personal health needs, such as medical and dental care or mental health appointments may arise throughout the academic year. We offer flexible scheduling during work hours for our residents to attend any appointments without retribution.
Personal wellness days: Residents receive a minimum of one personal day per quarter and are encouraged to utilize these days on an ongoing basis.
Mental health resources: All trainees at Mount Sinai are guaranteed access to confidential mental health services through the Student and Trainee Mental Health Program (STMH) in addition to our supportive intra-departmental environment. In the event that professional help is needed, institutional mental health services are offered through STMH at no out-of-pocket expense.
