Training Areas

Throughout the HSPAL PGY2 residency year, the resident will partake in a series of required, elective, and longitudinal learning experiences to hone and develop their skills. Training areas include:

Required Learning Experiences

Orientation 

Residency program orientation will involve introduction to the program as well as local and executive pharmacy leaders throughout the Health System. You will also be oriented to your base site where you will be functioning as a manager on-call every third weekend throughout your residency. 

Pharmacy Operations 

Throughout this learning experience, you will use your skillset to manage inpatient pharmacy operations. You will be involved in front-line pharmacy staff communications, management, compliance projects, process/quality improvement initiatives, and interdisciplinary meetings to engage key stakeholders across the Health System.

Pharmacy Informatics and Data Analytics

You will analyze pharmacy information technology workflow and identify means to assure safe and efficient patient care. You will learn to work with Epic Willow and Pyxis ES automated systems as well as data streams around medication use and cost. Using these modalities, you will design and implement an information technology improvement. 

340B & Finance

Ensuring optimal patient care while maintaining fiscal solvency is required for conducting smooth operations. Throughout this learning experience, you will learn about societal forces that influence medication costs and provision of pharmacy services. You will participate in the operating and capital budget processes for pharmacy activities and monitor ongoing financial performance.

Clinical Pharmacy Services 

You will evaluate medication policy and clinical services provided by the Health System while working alongside the clinical pharmacy team. Activities are centered around planning, conducting, and implementing of clinical pharmacy initiatives across the system. Throughout the learning experience, you will build upon your clinical and management skills by working with various stakeholders across all phases of the process leading to operationalization of clinical initiatives. 

Revenue Cycle Management

You will be oriented to pharmacy revenue cycle processes by participating in the ASHP Pharmacy Revenue Cycle Management Certification program. The foundation gained from the certification program will be used to develop an ongoing self-education plan to ensure knowledge of rapidly changing guidelines. You will connect with internal and external revenue cycle management experts and determine opportunities for internal process optimization. Skills gained throughout this learning experience will assist in the determination of formulary or process change feasibility in any setting.

Executive Pharmacy Leadership 

You will explore the Health System’s structure, network of resources, and politics while working alongside executive pharmacy leaders across the system. You will utilize the skills gained to determine strategies for achieving success in multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Ambulatory Pharmacy Services 

You will learn about the systematic approach to offering care to patients and the integrated health care delivery model. Working alongside our ambulatory pharmacy management team, you will learn how to incorporate your clinical skills into ambulatory health pharmacy management, and utilize your management skills to improve and expand your clinical work. You will be afforded the opportunity to emphasize key management skills that are necessary to direct operations of an ambulatory pharmacy department while ensuring continued compliance with all legal mandates and patient quality/safety initiatives. You will become an integral part of service-level initiatives, working on various projects both clinically and/or operationally related to ambulatory pharmacy.

Pharmacy Supply Chain

You will gain an understanding of medication distribution processes as well as their clinical, safety, and operational implications. You will participate in the development and coordination of medication-use policy improvement initiatives, evaluate medication distribution processes, and participate in assuring pharmacy compliance with internal and external requirements.

Elective Learning Experiences

Ambulatory Infusion Services

You will be introduced to clinical and technical aspects of infusion therapy at Mount Sinai Morningside and gain basic understanding of evaluating and providing care in an outpatient setting. Throughout this learning experience, you will shadow home infusion and specialty areas to become familiar with workflows, demonstrate competence and functionality of carious clinical dispensing software and applications.

Investigational Drug Research

You will learn the acquisition, administration, disposal, and documentation processes associated with investigational therapies. You will participate in ongoing clinical trials across the Health System and will coordinate efforts with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to optimize billing and operational processes.

Group Purchasing Organization (GPO)

You will be oriented to pharmaceutical supply chain and group purchasing practices in this four to six-week virtual learning experience. You will work with cross-functional pharmacy teams to gain an appreciation of pharmaceutical pricing, contracting practices, and value-added clinical, analytical, and advocacy services that GPOs provide in health care.

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

Formulary and Policy Management

You will learn about formulary management strategies that inform and guide Health System practice. You will work alongside multiple pharmacy teams, including clinical, operational, information technology, supply chain, and medication safety, to affect formulary and medication policy decision making. You will have the opportunity to work with multiple stakeholders to develop, review, and communicate formulary updates that align with Health System priorities. Projects may include development of a drug monograph, medication policy, therapeutic interchange, or class review. 

Human Resource Management

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of human resource management, including service needs assessments, recruitment strategies, interviewing methodologies, performance measures and evaluation, creation of performance improvement plans, and employee engagement and labor management principles.  You will assess the needs of the Department, identify opportunities for expansion, develop a current and future state staffing and service plan, and develop a comprehensive business plan to present to hospital leadership.  You will also review applicant resumes and select candidates for interview for open positions, participate in interviews, and contribute to the final hiring decision.  This longitudinal experience will provide you the opportunity to participate in organized training programs to develop your understanding of labor management considerations. 

Medication Safety and Quality

Throughout this experience, you will develop the skills and confidence necessary to independently improve safety and quality in the medication use process. You will develop effective strategies to improve medication safety, quality, regulatory compliance and the patient experience for the Health System. While collaborating with safety leaders, you will employ the techniques needed for identifying and implementing medication safety improvements by conducting safety assessments such as FMEAs, RCAs, and GAP analyses.

Staffing

You will function as manager on-call and will be responsible for any staffing, inventory, automation, and clinical issues that arise during your on-call period.

Educational Conference
Throughout the year, you will design and present journal clubs, leadership seminars, and networking sessions.

Research Project

Conducting pharmacy practice research is integral to residency training. The ability to conceive an idea, outline its implementation and design an evaluation impart the skills needed to optimize pharmacy services. This learning experience will provide you the opportunity to conduct a project that develops a process, service or other intervention intended to grow the pharmacy' reach and improve patient care.
