Center for Epithelial and Airway Biology and Regeneration

Research

Research in the Center for Epithelial and Airway Biology and Regeneration focuses on epithelial cells and regeneration. Epithelial cells make up the outer layer of the skin and internal organs such as lung, kidney and intestine. These cells play a crucial role in many physiological processes, as well as protecting the body from external damage and maintaining the body’s overall structure and integrity. Epithelial tissues are able to regenerate, meaning that they can repair or replace damaged or diseased cells. We study the mechanisms by which epithelial tissues develop in embryonic life and regenerate and repair tissue in adult life. We use this information to develop new therapies for diseases of epithelial tissues including skin and hair, breast, pancreas, upper airway, lung, kidney, liver, stomach and intestine.
