Message From the Chair

Recent advances in anesthesiology have transformed surgical care, enabling shorter recovery times and allowing most procedures to be performed on an outpatient basis. These improvements have not only reduced postoperative pain but have also made surgery possible for elderly and medically complex patients who would have previously been considered too high-risk for certain procedures.

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has an unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research. Over the past decade, we have doubled in size and now train about two percent of all anesthesiology residents and fellows in the United States. This growth positions us as leaders in education, and our graduates positively impact anesthesia care wherever they practice.

What truly sets us apart is our faculty. We have amassed a team of outstanding world-class clinicians, educators, and researchers who are leaders in their respective subspecialties and deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of anesthesiologists. Their expertise, combined with our state-of-the-art facilities and diverse clinical settings, creates an unparalleled learning environment that fosters academic rigor and innovation.

Our research endeavors from basic science to clinical trials have a particular focus on perioperative outcomes, the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence, and pain management. This robust research program directly enhances the care we provide our patients.

At Mount Sinai, we take pride in our history of serving a diverse patient population that comes to the Mount Sinai Health System from near and far. Like New York City, our staff is highly diverse; many are first-generation health care providers, and fluency in a second language is common. We aim to foster an inclusive and collegial environment focused on patient safety, quality of care, employee wellness, and teamwork.

Our system’s growth in geography, volume, and reputation depends on our commitment to excellence, innovation, and the compassionate care that drives our work.
