Message From the Chief

For over a century, the Dr. Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology has stood at the forefront of discovery and innovation in digestive health. It was here that Crohn’s disease and benign paroxysmal peritonitis, now known as familial Mediterranean fever, were first described. These landmark contributions, among many others, reflect our legacy of advancing the entire field of gastroenterology.

Today, we remain a global leader in the care of complex gastrointestinal disorders, grounded in an integrated model that unites expert clinicians, pioneering scientists, and dedicated educators. We carry forward that same spirit of innovation and excellence in all that we do. Our teams care for some of the most challenging cases in the country, and our commitment to advancing the science and practice of gastroenterology is evident across every dimension, from providing cutting-edge clinical care and transformative research to premier training programs.

Mount Sinai’s Susan and Leonard Feinstein Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Center is among the most comprehensive and renowned inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) centers in the world. Through a unique multidisciplinary approach, we deliver highly personalized, state-of-the-art care to patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, while conducting translational research that is shaping the future of IBD treatment. Likewise, our other centers of excellence offer patients extensive expertise, advanced technologies, and a commitment to compassionate care. These include:

At the heart of our continued excellence is our longstanding commitment to providing exceptional education and training. Since receiving our first NIH fellowship training grant in 1958, we have remained a national leader in preparing the future leaders of our field. In addition to our world-class, fully accredited three-year Gastroenterology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital, we offer the Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West, the Present-Levison Advanced IBD Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital, the Wong-Tang Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Interventional Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mount Sinai South Nassau—all of which are designed to help our trainees exit fully equipped to succeed.

Whether you are a future colleague, referring physician, trainee or patient, I invite you to explore the Division and experience the depth of expertise, innovation, and collaboration that guides our work and drives our mission each day.
