MS Biostatistics Admissions

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, statisticians are among the fastest growing professions in the United States. In 2018, statisticians were ranked number two in “Best Jobs” with the demand in STEM jobs expected to rise to 34 percent in the next 10 years, as reported by U.S News & World Report.

If you are ready to embark on the next phase of your training our Master of Science in Biostatistics program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will advance you on this path.

Admissions Requirements

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program curriculum consists of two program tracks of at least 34 credits which must be completed in one full-time academic year. Applicants may choose from either the Theory and Methods Track or Clinical Applications Track.

For the Theory and Methods Track, admissions eligibility include:

  • At least one college-level linear algebra course with grade of B or higher
  • At least two semesters of college-level calculus with grade of B or higher
  • GRE (optional)
  • TOEFL if you are coming from a non-English speaking country

For the Clinical Applications Track, admissions eligibility include:

  • At least one semester of college-level calculus with grade of B or higher
  • At least one college-level linear algebra course with grade of B or higher
  • GRE (optional)
  • TOEFL score if you are coming from a non-English speaking country

Additionally, you must be a clinical researcher with a degree in medical sciences and be actively involved in clinical research.

How to Apply

For admissions to either track, completed applications must include:

  • Personal statement (700 words or less) clearly explaining your motivation for applying to the program and your post-graduation career objectives
  • Current curriculum vitae or resume
  • Non-refundable application fee of $80 (Waived for Fall 2020)
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate programs attended
  • Two letters of recommendation to be emailed by recommenders directly to admissions@mssm.edu
  • GRE scores, and TOEFL scores if applicable, using School Code 2464 

Application Review & Decisions

Applications may be submitted from September 15th through July 1st. Admissions will be considered for the following semester.

You will receive a comprehensive evaluation for admission based on factors including your academic record, post-undergraduate professional experiences, and motivation for successful completion of the program. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition for the 2020-2021 Academic Year is $1,250 per credit. Students must earn a minimum of 34 credits to complete the degree. Learn more about tuition and fees for our degree program.
