Abdominal and Thoracic Imaging Fellowship

The Abdominal and Thoracic Imaging Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers a unique opportunity to specialize in two of the most rapidly growing subspecialties in radiology. This one-year program provides a curriculum combining clinical experience, academic learning, and scientific investigation. While at Icahn Mount Sinai, our fellows gain expertise in interpreting complex imaging studies of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, and engage in research alongside faculty experts. Our graduates exit equipped to excel in the fields of abdominal and thoracic imaging, well positioned to assume leadership roles in academic and clinical settings.

With a focus on diseases of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, the Abdominal and Thoracic Imaging Fellowship provides exposure to a wide array of diagnostic imaging techniques, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), and interventional procedures. Throughout the program, fellows develop proficiency in interpreting complex cases involving the lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, genitourinary system, and other vital structures.

Overseen by Sara Lewis, MD (Body MRI), and Adam Jacobi, MD (Thoracic Imaging), this fellowship synergizes the strengths of both subspecialties and integrates academic learning with hands-on experience. Our fellows spend approximately 20 weeks on body MRI, 4 weeks on abdominal CT/US, and 16 weeks on thoracic imaging, and enjoy 8 weeks of elective focus and 4 weeks of vacation.

In addition to clinical rotations, our fellows participate in monthly journal clubs and case conferences in radiology. They also engage in clinical conferences with the pulmonary, thoracic oncology, liver surgical oncology, pathology, liver and kidney transplant, hepatology, urology, gastroenterology, and oncology services.

Performing radiology research is an integral and required component of our training program. Fellows are encouraged to become involved with both translational and clinical research, and they typically participate in at least one retrospective or prospective research study while at Icahn Mount Sinai.

To help our fellows achieve their research goals, we provide a supportive infrastructure and weekly academic time. A subsidy is available to those invited to present at conferences, and Icahn Mount Sinai fellows often present their findings at the following meetings: Society of Thoracic Radiology, International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Society of Abdominal Radiology, Society for Advanced Body Imaging, and the Radiological Society of North America. Previous fellows have also published in radiology journals and won awards for their research.

Beyond research opportunities available in the Department of Radiology, our fellows may elect to engage in research within the Mount Sinai BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute. Comprising several labs pertaining to cardiopulmonary and abdominal imaging research, the Institute focuses on bridging basic and translational research by conducting research that leverages expertise in medicine, medical physics, and engineering. These diverse research opportunities allow each fellow to pursue projects that truly interest them, including in areas such as advanced imaging techniques, cancer imaging, nanomedicine, and artificial intelligence.

The Abdominal and Thoracic Imaging Fellowship is offered to one applicant per year. We begin accepting applications annually on November 1. To apply, please email the following materials to Jennifer Polanco, Senior Program Coordinator, and Zudith Maduro, Program Manager:

  • Completed application form
  • Curriculum vitae (CV), including information for every year since graduation of your undergraduate program
  • CV addendum form
  • Personal statement
  • Final transcript, including information on required clinical clerkships and graduation date
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination Scores Report (Steps 1, 2, and 3)
  • Copy of medical school diploma, including the English translation, if necessary
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates Certificate, if applicable
  • Three letters of recommendation, with one being from your program director
