Our Residents

Like our neighborhood, our residents are quite diverse. Most residents are foreign medical graduates from around the world, oftentimes with considerable medical experience or even subspecialty training in their countries of origin. Extensive research experience is also very common among our residents. This represents an amazing resource for our program: we strongly encourage our residents to share their unique experience and knowledge with each other.

Every year, 6 to 7 Residents are elected to be Chief Residents. The Chief Residents are in charge of the whole organization of the academic year including scheduling the clinical rotations, organizing all educational sessions and overseeing several administrative aspects of the program. They represent role models and teachers for their juniors and peers and invaluable advocates for the rest of the Residents.

Resident life in NYC can be all you have imagined and much more. The city offers endless activities from Broadway shows to street fairs, from museums to sport events and more restaurants than you will ever be able to visit.  Additionally we have a number of committees that contribute to your full experience as a resident.

Ombudsman Office: Ombudsman represents neutral, independent, impartial party, and offers a safe space to raise concerns about training-related issue. We thrive providing collegial environment for our residents including providing access to Residency Program Ombudsman.

Ombudsman Goals

  • provide safe and informal opportunities to be heard
  • assist in identifying options for managing or resolving concerns
  • educate about administrative and policy options
  • refer individuals toward appropriate formal processes and resources
  • facilitate communication between or among conflicting parties
  • provide an alternative, confidential channel for recommending internal operations/systems/policy/process changes in GME
  • share feedback about trends in conflicts, hot-button issues or other matters of importance to GME leadership

Ombudsman Services

  • Residents, fellows, and faculty seeking assistance from the Ombudsman may experience some of the following during a visit with the Ombudsman: exploring options for resolution; brainstorming to identify or clarify issues and next steps; sharing of information and options; identifying and clarifying applicable policies and procedures; referrals to formal channels with investigatory powers; facilitating dialogue and group discussions; reviewing correspondence; making referrals; arranging for formal mediation; sharing self-help tools and resources for support
  • In addition to individual meetings, the Ombudsman may conduct workshops, prepare publications and resources, review GME and training program policies, procedures, and protocols relevant to concerns; recommend policy establishment or revision; and report on new and changing trends within the UB GME community.

Wellness Program Committee: The mission of our own Wellness and Resilience Program is to ensure residents enjoy the residency and finish it in a good physical and mental state.

It is well known that residency often takes heavy toll on resident’s wellbeing. Long working hours, deficiency of healthy food and exercise, inability to spend sufficient time with family, never-ending stress, huge amount of responsibility, working under pressure, witnessing patient’s deterioration in spite of all measures (and this list can go on and on) can cause significant damage and burnout. It is impossible to deliver empathetic and efficient patient care and experience professional fulfillment when you are in a state of a train wreck. We want to prevent our residents from becoming patients themselves and want them to find satisfaction in their profession and  that is what essentially our wellness program is all about.

Resources available:

  • Wellness program at Mount Sinai with available mental health resources.
  • 4 wellness days per year.
  • Mentorship program that involves not only discussion of career goals, but also overall residency experience and any personal issues as well.
  • Educational session and daily breaks.
  • Lounge room in NCB.
  • Gym available for residents at VA.
  • Regular social events outside of VA/NCB.

Social Events Committee: Since a healthy work/life balance during residency is as difficult as it is essential, our Social Events Committee is constantly working to organize happy hours, holiday parties, dinners, escape the room games, yoga classes, etc to promote social activities amongst our residents. These events significantly contribute to team building and improve collaboration at work. Plus, they are a lot of fun!

Transportation:

  • Free shuttle is available to our resident during weekdays from James J Peters VAMC to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan upper east side.
  • Both James J Peters VAMC and North Central Bronx Hospital have free parking for Residents
  • The Bronx is served by numerous MTA subway lines: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, A, B, C and D
