Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Elmhurst

The Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Elmhurst provides a comprehensive educational and training experience in each of two years of training in a major urban teaching hospital. The program has been in continuous operation since 1965 as a component of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Services New York City Health + Hospitals - Elmhurst Hospital and is fully accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Program graduates have pursued a wide range of clinical, academic and administrative careers in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry.

The overall goal of the program is to train physicians to become skilled specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry who are competent to provide high quality, evidence-based care to children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and developmental disorders, to practice independently on graduation from the program and to achieve certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in this subspecialty. Training takes place over a period of two years in a series of graduated clinical and didactic experiences that are intended to assist fellows in developing required levels of proficiency in the six competency areas designated in the ACGME Developmental Milestones in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice). A major theme throughout both years of training is the importance of developmental perspective, biopsychosocial approach and collaboration with families and other systems (mental health, pediatric, school, foster care, child protection, legal) in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents. Specific goals are provided for each clinical rotation and curriculum component.
