Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Department of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at The Mount Sinai Hospital, accredited by the Committee on Advanced Subspecialty Training (CAST) of the Council of the Society of Neurological Surgeons

This is a one-year program providing extensive experience in surgery and radiosurgery. Our program focuses on training fellows to become academic neurosurgical oncologists with expertise in diagnosing and surgically treating adults with primary and metastatic brain and spine tumors, meningiomas, and pituitary and other skull base tumors. Fellows receive comprehensive training in one of the largest multidisciplinary neurosurgery oncology programs in the northeastern United States. The program includes neuropathologists, neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapists, palliative care physicians, and advanced practice providers.

Fellows work directly with the clinical attendings and are clinically immersed, evaluating and managing a wide variety of neurosurgical oncology patients. Fellows will evaluate and master the treatment of a broad range of neurosurgical oncology diseases. Fellows are exposed to more than 1,000 major operative neurosurgical oncology cases during the year and will perform surgical procedures under the direction of an attending surgeon. During the year, fellows will gain surgical skills using multiple surgical adjuncts, including neuronavigation, virtual and augmented reality, endoscopy, exoscope, intra-operative monitoring, and radiosurgery.

Fellows are also responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care and participate in outpatient clinics, hospital consultations, and supervising and instructing residents and medical students. Additionally, they will learn about the evaluation of patients for our clinical trial research program and have the opportunity to serve as sub-investigators on ongoing studies. Our fellows see patients with faculty members in The Derald H. Ruttenberg Treatment Center, part of The Tisch Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. They also see inpatients in The Mount Sinai Hospital and will have longitudinal outpatient experience at clinics.

We expect our fellows to read widely in the neurosurgery oncology literature, take a proactive role in our clinical activities, help mentor our residents and students, and prepare and present the results of their work at national meetings, including but not limited to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the annual conference of the Society of Neuro-Oncology. Fellows regularly attend neurosurgery oncology-pertinent conferences within the department, including biweekly treatment planning/neuroradiology conferences, a weekly multidisciplinary neurosurgery oncology tumor board, weekly neurosurgery grand rounds, a monthly interdisciplinary pituitary tumor board, and monthly neurosurgery journal clubs, as well as quarterly diversity, equity, and inclusion journal clubs. We expect fellows to prepare presentations for delivery at these educational activities.

Eligibility

The neurosurgical fellowship is available to candidates who will have completed an ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency upon starting the fellowship year and who are in excellent standing at their institution. We do not allow enfolded fellowships. We encourage applications from fellows who are interested in developing an academic career in neurosurgical oncology.
