Curriculum

The Cardiology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Morningside-BronxCare is dedicated to shaping the future of cardiology through comprehensive training and education. By combining rigorous clinical instruction with cutting-edge academic opportunities, we prepare fellows for distinguished careers in both clinical practice and academic medicine. Within the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, our faculty's expertise and daily didactic programs ensure that fellows develop the deep knowledge base and decision-making skills essential for excellence in cardiovascular medicine.

Our commitment extends beyond technical proficiency to encompass the development of well-rounded physicians. Fellows engage in structured leadership training and receive opportunities to exercise their growing capabilities in clinical, academic, and administrative roles during their second and third years. This leadership development occurs within an environment that emphasizes integrity, professionalism, and compassionate patient care, ensuring our fellows understand both the academic and emotional dimensions of health care delivery.

The fellowship’s core clinical rotations include:

Echocardiography
Rotations at BronxCare offer personalized teaching in Transthoracic and Transesophageal Echocardiography, while Mount Sinai Morningside provides experience with intraoperative imaging and structural heart procedures, including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement, Patent Foramen Ovale closure, and various cardiac devices. Additional elective opportunities are available at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Nuclear Cardiology
Nuclear cardiology training at BronxCare includes stress-rest Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography and pyrophosphate imaging for cardiac amyloid detection. Fellows conduct daily stress tests using exercise, medication-based approaches, and rotate at Mount Sinai Morningside's Nuclear Cardiology lab to gain experience with Positron Emission Tomography scanning technology.

Cardiac CT
The Cardiac and Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography program reviews nearly 2,000 cases annually. Fellows learn to interpret calcium scans, evaluate coronary anatomy, assess plaque characteristics, and determine coronary narrowing. The program now includes fractional flow reserve assessment from resting coronary scans.

Cardiac MRI
Fellows receive on-site training in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at Mount Sinai Morningside, learning to evaluate heart structure, function, valve conditions, scarring, and blood flow. Training covers non-ischemic heart muscle diseases, pericardial conditions, and cardiac masses, with opportunities for advanced study in the third year.

Valvular Heart Disease
The Valvular Heart Disease rotation at The Mount Sinai Hospital provides experience in this emerging field. Fellows assess valve narrowing and leakage in-clinic and learn cardiac imaging guidance for minimally invasive valve procedures in the catheterization laboratory, using various echocardiography techniques.

Congenital Heart Disease
Fellows complete a one-month Adult Congenital Heart Disease rotation at The Mount Sinai Hospital, providing both inpatient and outpatient care. The rotation includes interpreting pediatric heart imaging and participating in procedures for both simple and complex congenital heart conditions.

Interventional Cardiology
The majority of fellows’ catheterization training occurs at BronxCare Hospital's award-winning ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction-capable laboratory, where fellows receive one-on-one teaching in diagnostic and interventional procedures as primary assistants. Additional rotations at Mount Sinai Morningside provide experience with complex coronary, peripheral, and structural cases, with optional advanced training available at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Cardiac Intensive Care
Fellows rotate through Cardiac Intensive Care Units at both hospitals, managing advanced cardiac conditions and learning emergency procedures. At Mount Sinai Morningside, they handle complex cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, post-cardiac arrest, and structural interventional cases, while BronxCare offers experience in an 11-bed combined cardiac and surgical unit. Training includes bedside cardiac imaging, catheter placement, pacemaker insertion, and emergency cardiac procedures.

Cardiac Electrophysiology
The nationally recognized electrophysiology program at Mount Sinai Morningside provides comprehensive training in heart rhythm management, including outpatient care, consultations, device therapy, and invasive procedures. Fellows gain additional experience at BronxCare's award-winning program, serving as first assistants for device implantations.

Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation
At Mount Sinai Morningside, fellows provide outpatient and inpatient care while learning to integrate clinical trial findings with patient treatment. The rotation covers heart failure's connection to rhythm disorders, devices, procedures, and rehabilitation. At The Mount Sinai Hospital, fellows learn to manage heart transplant and Left Ventricular Assist Device patients, including immunosuppression, complications, and rejection monitoring.

Consultation Service
Fellows complete six months of consultation service across both hospitals, managing diverse cardiac conditions while developing consulting skills. At BronxCare, they simultaneously cover cardiac intensive care. The rotation emphasizes communication with various health care teams and development of professional relationships across the health care system.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Service
During this two-week elective at Mount Sinai Morningside, fellows learn pre-operative assessment, surgical risk evaluation, and post-operative care. They gain experience in comparing surgical, minimally invasive, and medical approaches while participating in surgical team discussions and intensive care management.

Preventative Cardiology
During this two-week elective, fellows learn pre-operative assessment, surgical risk evaluation, and post-operative care. They gain experience in comparing surgical, minimally invasive, and medical approaches while participating in surgical team discussions and intensive care management.

Additional Experiences

Clinic
Fellows manage their own patient panel one afternoon weekly at BronxCare Hospital under faculty mentorship throughout their three-year training. This long-term patient care experience develops skills in chronic cardiovascular disease management, with access to Mount Sinai's specialized services when needed.

On-Call Experience
Fellows provide after-hours coverage at BronxCare Hospital through home call, managing consultations primarily by phone. Weekend responsibilities include Cardiac Intensive Care Unit rounds, with in-person evaluation reserved for unstable patients.

Conferences
Daily conferences are a highlight of our program. Conferences are held every day at Mount Sinai Morningside and are available via Zoom for fellows rotating at BronxCare Hospital. Fellows at BronxCare also attend daily noon conferences. Conferences are mandatory for all cardiology fellows and fellows are not expected to engage in clinical duties during conference times.

Research
With a diversity of pathophysiology seen through the various clinical teaching sites, our fellows are routinely involved in case reports and research paper publications, as well as presentations at conferences. Some recent conferences attended by our fellows include:

  • American Heart Association Annual Conference
  • American College of Cardiology Annual Conference
  • Cardiovascular Research Therapeutics Annual Conference
  • Cardiovascular Innovations Annual Conference

Each fellow is awarded an annual travel grant to attend conferences and a separate educational grant to cover additional expenses.
