International Visiting Scholars Program in Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital

J-1 Sponsorship in Dermatology

As part of the J-1 sponsorship in Dermatology, visiting physicians are invited to take part in regular didactic sessions within the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and will additionally have specific lectures on dermatology. Grand Rounds are expected to take one to two hours per week, and lectures in didactic sessions five hours per week. Evening citywide lectures constitute two to four hours per week, and the Journal Club meets for one hour per week.

Visiting physicians will also participate in a research study, which can focus on a range of skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo. The expectation is that at least one manuscript will be published by each fellow. Please note that participation is solely for the purposes of observation, consultation, teaching, or research.

With a duration of six months to two years, accepted scholars are expected to support their expenses for the full duration. For programs with duration up to six months, the minimum required funding is $2,600 per month (or its equivalent in foreign currency). For programs with duration between six months and two years, the minimum required funding is $50,000 per year (or its equivalent in foreign currency). Self-funding (showing personal or family/friend funds) is not permitted. Participants are required to submit evidence of their outside health insurance coverage that covers the duration of the proposed stay in the United States and that meets the Department of State minimum criteria for health insurance coverage. These criteria include:

• Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
• Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
• Expenses associated with medical evacuation of the Exchange Visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
• A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

The Scholars Program is not a pathway to any academic or clinical training program at any Mount Sinai entity; it solely supplements medical and cosmetic dermatology training received during your external academic program.
