The research agendas of the Department and Institutes are carefully designed to capitalize on the interplay between clinical science, studies of the performance and outcomes of health systems, and the practical quest to reform health policies. The mission of the Department incorporates the central elements of these interdependent and interactive fields. As a result, we are well-situated to lead in seizing the many opportunities offered by advances in biomedical research and health care reform initiatives. In particular, the Department leads in the areas of translational research, comparative effectiveness research, and quality improvement, and health care cost reduction.
