Choosing a residency is much more than finding a place to train; it is about finding a community that will support you, challenge you, and help you become the physician you aspire to be. As Associate Program Directors, our role is to make sure every resident has the guidance, mentorship, and resources they need to succeed throughout that journey.
Although we come from different backgrounds (Canada and Kansas!) and practice in different areas of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, we share the same commitment: helping every resident reach their full potential while feeling supported by every step of the way.
We have both experienced the challenges of relocating, adapting to a different healthcare system, and building a life in a new city. This has provided a unique perspective on the transition into residency. We both understand firsthand the rewards and challenges of training at Mount Sinai, from navigating life in New York City to growing into an independent physiatrist. Together, these experiences allow us to connect with residents from a variety of backgrounds and appreciate that every resident's journey is different.
Education is at the center of everything we do. We work closely with faculty and residents to continually strengthen our curriculum, develop individualized learning plans, and ensure that every resident is progressing toward their goals. Through our leadership of the Program Evaluation Committee and Clinical Competency Committee, we monitor resident milestones, review program feedback, and work to continuously improve the educational experience.
Beyond committees and curriculum, we believe some of the most meaningful moments in residency happen through mentorship. Whether it's board preparation, exploring fellowship opportunities, navigating a difficult rotation, or simply adjusting to residency life, we strive to be approachable mentors who celebrate your successes and help you overcome challenges.
We also enjoy working closely with our residents during recruitment season because we believe our people are what makes this program truly special. Every new class shapes our culture, and we are committed to building a residency that values collaboration, compassion, curiosity, and excellence.
Our hope is that every resident feels challenged to become the best physician they can be while always knowing they have a leadership team invested in their growth, not only as physiatrists, but as individuals.
