Psychiatry Residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens

The Psychiatry Residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens is a four-year program designed to train excellent general psychiatrists to serve the mental health needs of patients. Learning in an innovative teaching environment, our residents flourish into compassionate, competent, and intellectually curious clinicians and educators who possess the skills to enter academic and clinical practice. Residents practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, part of the largest municipal health care system in the United States. NYC Health + Hospitals is an integrated health care system of hospitals, neighborhood health centers, long-term care, nursing homes, and home care. Our trainees experience a diversity of patients, clinical settings, languages, and community needs.

Curriculum

The residency program encompasses a comprehensive four-year curriculum designed to transform physicians into skilled psychiatrists through progressive clinical exposure and didactic education. During their first year, our residents begin with foundational training in history taking, mental status examinations, and introductions to psychotherapy and art therapy while participating in weekly standard patient interviews and board preparation sessions. Their second year builds upon this foundation, continuing the same structured educational approach while expanding their clinical responsibilities.

By the third year of residency, training intensifies with specialized focus on various psychotherapeutic modalities, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, supportive, interpersonal, and family approaches, alongside dedicated time for child psychotherapy and psychological testing. The final year emphasizes clinical leadership and independent practice, maintaining the core educational components while adding specialized supervision for both medication management and psychotherapy.

Throughout all four years, residents benefit from consistent individual and group supervision, regular conference participation, grand rounds, journal clubs, and continuous psychopharmacology education. This creates a seamless progression from novice to competent psychiatric specialist prepared for independent practice or fellowship training.
