The Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is dedicated to delivering superior, comprehensive dermatologic care, exceeding our patients’ expectations in service and satisfaction and advancing the science of dermatology through research and education
Our Department is committed to excellence in research and treatment, offering high-level expertise in such diseases and conditions as skin cancer, psoriasis, mycosis fungoides (cutaneous T-cell lymphoma), eczema, acne, alopecia areata, vitiligo, medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. Our faculty consists of more than 50 staff and 250 affiliated dermatologists and researchers. Our Department is one of the largest in the United States.
We have one of the most active teaching programs of any dermatology residency program in the nation. Apart from teaching our own medical students and residents, we have visiting students, residents, and post-graduate physicians come to study at Mount Sinai every year. Our training videos and books are used by thousands of dermatologists around the world.
Divisions
We provide outstanding dermatological care in a cost-effective manner to all adult and pediatric patients seen in the Dermatology Clinic, the Inpatient Consult Service, and the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice. Our Department has several divisions and units:
- The Division of General Dermatology offers services in both adult and pediatric dermatology.
- The phototherapy center offers narrowband ultraviolet B (NBUVB), psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA), broadband UVB (BBUVB), hand and foot units, hair and scalp units, as well as a bathtub for soak PUVA. Conditions commonly treated are psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, mycosis fungoides (aka cutaneous T-cell lymphoma or CTCL), and pruritus (itching).
- The Clinical Trials Division conducts studies on cutting-edge treatments for a variety of conditions, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and eczema, alopecia areata, vitiligo, genital warts, and actinic keratosis.
- The inpatient consultative service, staffed by our residents and attendings who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, provides dermatological consultations for inpatients.
- The Dermatopathology Division, led by Robert Phelps, MD and George Niedt, MD, is responsible for processing and reading slides for scores of dermatologists in the New York area and is invaluable in helping dermatologists render accurate diagnoses and the highest quality of care.

The Division of Dermatologic Surgery offers a wide variety of dermatologic and cosmetic procedures. Our team specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery, cutaneous oncology, laser medicine, facial aesthetic surgery, non-invasive body contouring and eyelid rejuvenation.
- The dermatology research laboratories are involved in cutting-edge research in the areas of melanoma, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, vitiligo, cancer genetics, and related areas.
