Message from Dean Charney, MD

To progress gender equity at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we call upon each member of the community as we continue building an institution that values, promotes, and improves the experiences of people of all genders.

Working towards gender equity ensures that we retain and cultivate talent that is vital to the success of Mount Sinai’s innovative programs and care. Establishing the new Office of Gender Equity in Science and Medicine speaks to our commitment to facilitating important changes and our quest towards constant improvement for all students, trainees, and faculty.

The Office of Gender Equity in Science and Medicine is working in collaboration with several offices across Mount Sinai in an effort to reach tangible goals that directly impact both the structure and the climate of our institution. These goals include:

  • Addressing gender bias and mistreatment: Through clear guidelines as well as the promotion of and training on these guidelines, we will take the steps needed to ensure that we build a culture of respect.
  • Enhancing the recruitment, retention, compensation, and advancement of gender-diverse faculty and trainees: Together, we are evaluating our current landscape, creating new opportunities and programs to ensure that Mount Sinai is a place people of all genders come to work and thrive.
  • Advancing family-friendly policies: From expanding our daycare facilities to revamping our parental leave policy and lactation accommodations, family-friendly policies are critical to ensuring that people with growing families are valued and can pursue their careers.

It is our belief that Mount Sinai can become a beacon for gender equity across the nation and globe. We will be looking to leaders, from Mount Sinai and beyond, to inform our path forward. We hope that you will join us as we make Mount Sinai a place where people of all genders prosper.
