Cerebrovascular and Neurologic Critical Care Pre-Residency Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital

The Cerebrovascular and Neurologic Critical Care Pre-Residency Fellowship is an esteemed 12-month program designed for medical school graduates aspiring to strengthen their clinical foundation before embarking on formal residency training. This immersive fellowship experience is dedicated to exposing participants to the intricacies of neuro-intensive care, ensuring they are well prepared to handle critically ill neurology and neurosurgery patients, while also providing them with a thorough understanding of internal medicine and critical care medicine.

Meet the Director

Clinical Rotations: The entire 12-month duration will be dedicated to the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) at Mount Sinai West, with additional rotations in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Mount Sinai Queens and Mount Sinai Brooklyn, providing deep and multifaceted insights into cerebrovascular and neurologic critical care. This full immersion ensures that fellows are thoroughly prepared to manage a diverse array of complex cases, including ischemic stroke, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain tumors, status epilepticus, and neuromuscular emergencies.

Rotational Flexibility: In addition to the core Neuro ICU experience, fellows will have four weeks of elective time, allowing them to choose from a range of options such as the stroke service, neurology floor service, EEG reading, other ICUs within the Mount Sinai Health System, and various medical subspecialties. This comprehensive experience ensures that participants gain a well-rounded perspective on critical care and internal medicine, enriching their clinical knowledge and skills.

Advanced Skill Development: Our program emphasizes the acquisition of advanced clinical skills, ensuring fellows are proficient in the nuances of neurocritical care. This includes intensive training in:

  • Ventilator Management: Gaining expertise in managing mechanical ventilators to optimize respiratory support for patients with neurological conditions.
  • Hemodynamic and Intracranial Monitor Management: Developing competence in maintaining stable blood pressure and intracranial pressure, which are pivotal for the well-being of neurologically compromised patients.
  • Bedside Procedures: Gaining hands-on experience in essential bedside procedures, including arterial lines, central lines, bronchoscopy, and bedside tracheostomy.

Comprehensive Educational Experience:

Our fellowship program offers a comprehensive educational journey that extends beyond clinical rotations. Fellows will actively participate in a variety of educational activities, including:

  • Didactic Lectures: Engaging in twice-weekly lectures, guided by experts in the field, that delve into essential topics in cerebrovascular and neurologic critical care.
  • Monthly Simulation Sessions: Practicing clinical decision-making and teamwork skills in a controlled, simulated environment to enhance real-world performance.
  • Journal Clubs: Regularly convening to critically evaluate and discuss the latest research and advancements in neurocritical care.
  • Quality Assurance Discussions: Exploring best practices and quality improvement strategies to enhance patient care.
  • Grand Rounds in Critical Care Medicine: Attending influential sessions led by leaders in the field to further broaden your knowledge base.
