Message From the Chair

The Department of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai isn't just leading in neurosurgical innovation—we're redefining it, transforming lives through unparalleled patient care and groundbreaking scientific discoveries. As the largest neurosurgical program in New York City, our impact is profound and far-reaching. Patients choose us nearly three times more often than our closest peers, trusting our expertise across over 3,300 open neurosurgeries, 2,200 endovascular procedures, and 300 stroke thrombectomies annually. This extraordinary volume fuels a dynamic research-to-bedside pipeline, where cutting-edge discoveries swiftly evolve into revolutionary therapies and new standards of care.

With our expansive subspecializations, patients actively seek out our brain tumor, epilepsy, movement disorder, and neurocritical care teams at Mount Sinai. Paralleling our clinical prestige, the Department of Neurosurgery also spearheads extensive research, earning more NIH funding than all other regional programs combined.

Our residency program offers comprehensive education and training in neurosurgery, designed to shape skilled surgeon-scientists ready to lead in both clinical practice and innovative research. With a full year of protected research time and diverse rotations across neurology, neuropathology, pediatric neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and radiosurgery, we provide a well-rounded experience that prepares residents for outstanding careers. Integral to our mission is a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strive to train a new generation of neurosurgeons who better reflect our diverse patient population, recognizing that this diversity drives superior outcomes across multiple spheres of care.

Our growth over the past 15 years has been fueled by purposeful investments in our mission—exemplary patient care, groundbreaking research, and innovation. With an outstanding team of scientists and clinicians, and superb residents and fellows applying to train with us each year, the Department of Neurosurgery will lead the next century of brain and nervous system advancement.
